Covid 19 isn’t just influenza 2.0. It’s (1) much more contagious with R0 ranging from 2-4 (different peer reviewed papers give different figures) instead of 1 like normal flu, (2) it’s much more lethal with mortality rate being 2% instead of 0.1%, (3) infected people can transmit easily even when they’re asymptotic and feel fine so they could go out and about spreading it everywhere, (4) all those numbers are only estimates because we don’t know much about it yet, so it’s difficult to handle a large outbreak and (5) we have no vaccine for this strain yet, and vaccine will take until next year to be approved and mass produced, (6) it can mutate to be much more virulent than it is now.
The threat to a young, healthy person is relatively low, but it is a risk elderly and immuno compromised people can’t really afford to take, not to mention the pressure put on existing health care system that can have a spill over effect to other patients.
I’m not fear mongering or doom saying but the common seasonal flu that infects millions of people a year with 0.1% mortality and a new virus that has the potential to infect very quickly with 2% mortality and no vaccine yet shouldn’t be compared with each other.
