CCI: First Official Image From Cowboys & Aliens

In the wake of this evening’s Universal Pictures presentation at Comic-Con International, the studio has released the first official image from Cowboys & Aliens, the Jon Favreau adaptation of the Platinum Studios graphic novel.

The still is, of course, Daniel Craig, who stars as Zeke Jackson, the mysterious stranger who unites the town against alien invaders. The film also stars Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde, Paul Dano, Keith Carradine, Adam Beach and Clancy Brown. Here’s the official synopsis

1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It’s a town that lives in fear.

But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.

Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents — townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors — all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

Cowboys & Aliens opens on July 29, 2011.

Pretty interesting. Kinda wish Craig had facial hair for this role because I keep seeing Bond.

Heh, yeah Terry, somthing to make him look a little more "gunslinger-ish" and rugged like a Cowboy.

I'm looking forward to this flick, I've been following Favs on twitter. The concept sounds fun to me. I hope the footage gets leaked soon.

When he was announced, I kept trying to picture Craig as a cowboy and I just could not see it. However, he looks perfect in that picture. I heard that the footage shown at the panel was fantastic.

I wonder if the aliens are going to be extremely cheesy like in Mars Attacks! or more evil-like as in War of the Worlds....

will the comic con footage be released officially online like Thor?

Favreau has said that the type of sci-fi he is doing is the horror type. Alien, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Predator were examples that he used when describing it.

Lol, that is almost the whole alien spectrum from nice alien ( Close Encounter ) to honorable but dangerous ( Pred ) to extremly dangerous alien ( Alien ).

Well sort of.... Close Encounters has the Alien's an ominous possible threat 2/3's of the movie and it is shot that way. The scene where they take the kid through the door is definitely shot like horror.

That's still better than Mars Attacks. You don't want it too cheesy.

This abduction scene yes but you can guess that the aliens are friendly by the tone of the film but maybe I feel that way because I saw it a lot of times now.

I'm just glad it won't be cheesy but instead the aliens will be taken seriously.

Although a parody could have been funny under teh right circumstances. Problem with Mars Attacks is that it just isnt funny.
