GAH, one 3 hour class isn't bad, you'll live. I've had semesters with 3 of them at once. And about the not being able to sign up for the other class you want to take? It happens. I have to take a certain class for my particular specialization (psych major with an emphasis on clinical, the class is Psychological Testing) but its only offered falls of even years (ie this year) and I don't have one of the prereqs done for it, so it will be at least another two years before I can finish my degree.
