Japanese Bestseller Cartoonist Usui Found Dead, Yomiuri Reports

A famous Japanese animation artist, best known for the cartoon series “Crayon Shin-chan,” was found dead after going missing while walking in the mountains, the Yomiuri newspaper said today, citing local police.

Yo****o Usui, 51, went missing on Sept. 11 after telling his family he was planning to climb a mountain in Gunnma prefecture, north of Tokyo, the Yomiuri said in its report. Usui may have fallen from a cliff after being found with wounds to his chest, the Yomiuri report said.

The cartoonist became popular in the 1990s with Crayon Shin-chan, a comedy that features a five-year-old boy’s life with his family and friends at a kindergarten.

The series has sold about 50 million comic books since 1990 and was made into an animation film in 1992, the newspaper said.

R.I.P Usui. Shin Chan is absolutely hilarious and your work on the manga will be missed.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Tho I question his wisdom in trying to climb a mountain alone at 51 years old. Not saying that to sound like an ass, but that's a fairly stamina intensive passtime.

Don't worry, I asked the same question to my girlfriend, a fan of Crayon Shin-chan like myself.

Did anyone here know about the live action Crayon Shin-chan movie that just came out? It's freaking weird, as in it's not Crayon Shin-chan like at all. At least, that's the vibe I get every time I see something about it on (Tokyo) TV.

A horrible tragedy. May he rest in peace. Blessings to his family.

Thank you for all the great Shin-chan memories.

I have all the Shin-chan books, responsible as they were for my near-asphyxiation from excess of laughter on more than one occasion. Thank you, sir, for all the perverted joys you brought into my life through the character of Shin-chan. Gone though you may be, but immortalized you are through your books.

R.I.P., Mr. Usui.
