Creating Own Characters OR Using Fan Fiction

I prefer to create my own characters and storylines. Why do some people prefer to write fan fiction?
Surely the fun is creating your own Worlds and own characters?
Also you can publish your own books while fan fiction has copyright issues.
What do you guys say about fan fiction?

My fanfiction is a blend of my own characters interacting with my favorite X-Men, so best of both worlds really.
