'Creature from the Black Lagoon' in Pre-Production

After a nearly two-year gap, Director Bruck Eisner is now in pre-production for his remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon, which has Strike Entertainment producing with Universal Pictures distributing, according to Variety. The script was written by Gary Ross, which follows a scientific expedition traveling up the Amazon River encounter a dangerous humanoid amphibious fish creature.

I'm interested in this remake.

As I absolutely LOVE the original.

And Julie Adams was such a fox back then.

The Creature From the Black Lagoon Movie Remake to Be Released in 2008

Production for the Creature From the Black Lagoon remake will take place later this year. The movie is slated for release sometime in 2008 and is currently budgeted at $90 million. Breck Eisner is directing with Gary Ross (and Tedi Safarian assisting) as the screenwriter.

Says Eisner of the movie:

"I've always been a fan of the original, but for this I would love to just update and modernize the film," Eisner said in an interview. "We see it as an aggressive sci-fi horror film in the vein an 'Alien' or like John Carpenter's 'The Thing.' We want to elevate the source material."

According to the Movie Insider, the plot synopsis is:

A Victorian expedition group searching for fossils along the Amazon locate an area that has been kept on a tangential track of evolution alongside mankind, untouched by modern man, and filled with strange and fantastic creatures. This haven is guarded, however, by a sleek and clever gill-man: the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

So far, Universal Studios has signed Bill Paxton as an actor in the movie. If I was to make a guess, it would be to play the male lead (David Reed in the original). Brian Steele will play the Gillman. Stay tuned for updates.

As long as they ditch the entire speech about how all creatures have tried to evolve to humanity, the pinacle of evolution, I'll be happy...god that speech made no sense at all, especially if you know anything about how evolution works...

Sounds very promising. An aggresive sci-fi horror akin to Alien, and Carpenter's Thing with that kind of tension throughout the film is exactly the kind of movie I always felt a remake to The Creature from the Black Lagoon should be in order to be anything memorable. Anticipation has gone up a few notches after reading this.

That's cool. Obviously, I'm particularly curious as to who will be playing the Kay Lawrence role that the gorgeous Julie Adams played in the original. Definately staying tuned to this one.

could be interesting. weird that it's coming out the same year as the Wolfman remake

Thanks for the link to this, Darth. This project sounds really interesting. If they don't muck with the look of the Gillman too much, I'll be extra happy. That's one of the classic movie monsters that they got perfect the first time out of the gate. I like the idea of adding more tension to things along the lines of Alien or The Thing. And Paxton's one of my favorite actors; he's usually pretty careful with the scripts he chooses to work with. This is promising!

If they make this movie like the original Alien film or The Thing, this movie will own! When was the last time we had a good horror film in the vein of those two?

Wow... I been reading movie news for far too long... Look how old it's dated back when Sommer's was rumored to be doing a CftBL film... But also notice how things change....

As Stephen Somers latest film "The Mummy" still racks in the bucks (7.5million this week total now of 127.6 mill), a rumour has hit Darkhorizons that he has been asked to Direct a remake of "Creature From the Black Lagoon". The following is a quote from DH posted by Mr Brownings's Opus, "Stephen Sommers has been approached to do a "campy" remake of "Creature From The Black Lagoon" for Universal. It's set in a newly built hotel complex out in Florida. The movie is slated to be produced through Will Smith's company, at Universal." Somers has become hot property of late. Last week he was short listed by Spileberg for Jurassic Park 3. Well whtever the case, it won't be Julie Adams playing Kay Lawrence. So who could Hollywood cast in that position? That is going to be one HOT role.

No Sommers. :csad:

The original rocks.

I quite enjoyed JP3... It was better than JP2. :whatever:

True plus they gave the get rich or die tryin script a good review.

Okay, I didn't know that. Latino Review's credibility gets a "D". :down

You also have to take into account that the guy who writes those reviews sounds like uber-loser fanboy who just lives in hollywood with a job that affords him access to scripts. You can tell by the way he writes the reviews, he has no real clue what makes a good script since he never critiques, just provide huge boring plot summaries and then "z0mg that was amazing trust me" or "z0mg that was terrible trust me".

They need Will Smith blasting the creature's face with a shotgun and yelling "DAT'S WOT I'M TALKING 'BOUT!"

wasn't there some concept art for the creature a while back? i think from when guillermo del toro was attached to direct.
