Crimes of the Future - The New David Cronenberg Film

I knew nothing about this movie and I saw the trailer before The Northman last week. It takes a lot for a trailer to disturb the living **** out of me by this one definitely did it. It looks like a Tool video with A-List actors and I mean that as a compliment. Ticket sold.

So how long before some interviewer asks Cronenberg about whether he thinks Marvel movies suck and then he gives an answer that sets the internet ablaze for 24 hours?

Seriously, if I was a director who just made a movie as far from Hollywood-blockbusters you can get and got a question about Marvel-movies I'd just walk out of the room.

Same here. Because you know they’re just asking you that sort of thing to get clicks. And I guarantee someone will ask him about CBMs because he made a comment a number of years ago promoting Cosmopolis that Batman movies are crap or whatever, so some reporter is going to hit him with, “Well, you worked with Pattinson on Cosmopolis and now he’s Batman… has your opinion changed?”

Honestly when it comes to the eventual Blu-ray, they better just straight up skip any sort of studio release and just jump straight to a Criterion edition. Miss me with that bare bones release.
I'm still waiting for Criterion to release The Lighthouse.

Saw this trailer about two days ago. I was stumped. Cronenberg made (as in written, shot, edited & directed) 'Crimes of the Future' in 1970 but I gathered that the 2022 edition is not a remake. Haven't seen the 1970 one since the early 1980s on a grainy VHS cassette, so I can't remember much about it. lol

Does anyone know if this movie has any connection to the other one? Weird that he would use the same title if they aren’t connected in any way.

Regarding the Viggo/Cronenberg partnership… I have to say that I found A History of Violence underwhelming. It’s a good movie but I don’t really get the constant praise it receives. The story is pretty basic and I found the performances (Viggo in particular) a bit too subtle to really blow me away.

Now, I love their other films, A Dangerous Method and Eastern Promises, and Viggo very much impressed me in those films. But I guess AHOV just kinda left me expecting more. Maybe it was because I heard so much praise for it before I saw it and then I watched it and I was kinda like, “That was fine.” Maybe my expectations were too high.

I've never liked AHOV. The whole thing rubbed me the wrong way. I dont even know what about it puts me off, but its like a bad taste.

It doesn't quite work for me. I like it but I think the script, like Maps to the Stars, is a bit of a weird match for Cronenberg's sort of cool, cerebral approach. Two of his weaker films, imo.

Yeah, that’s how I felt about it too.

Anyway… did Viggo shave off his eyebrows for this movie?

I can’t wait for this! Looks so absurd and unsettling. I’m all for it

I expect nothing less from Cronenberg. Seeing this next weekend!

Really enjoyed this! There’s definitely some homages to Videodrome, Crash, Dead Ringers, and The Brood, but that scene really stuck with me more than any other scene he’s ever directed.

I also think it's a very funny movie, but if Cronenberg's sense of humor doesn't typically work for you, you might have a tough time sitting through this one. It really breezes by, though, and I have seen some middling reviews state they wish it was longer and that some things were more fleshed out... but like Cronenberg's other films, he kind of gets in there, hits his points with panache and some cool visual moments here and there, and then gets out while the budget still allows. I don't know if anything really necessary is missing from this movie, it just sets up such an interesting and involved world in about a hour and a half while the narrative plays out and then suddenly it's done. You almost feel like you're waiting for that "Next Episode" button to appear in the lower right. But I don't think that's a bad thing. Some movies can leave you wanting in a good way.

It's a movie I'd hesitate to recommend to most people but it was so far up my own alley it's hard for me not to talk about it in a positive way.
