Criterion Collection

Hm, that's pretty interesting. Seemed like they were kind of jumping to conclusion there at first, since Toho is a fairly large company with licenses over a lot, but after reading the article, I see what they're getting at. Would be pretty interesting to see. I've never actually seen the original Gojira, just the Americanized version.

I'm surprised Blade Runner wasn't a part of Criterion.

WB owns the rights to that movie -- and they would never ever license a popular title to Criterion (especially for a movie like BR or TDK). But the 2007 release is Criterion-worthy, great extras and superb restoration. All it's missing is a pamphlet with two scholarly essays and a chapter listing.

I love their releases of Benjamin Button, In the Realm of the Senses (yes, it's more than hardcore arthouse porn), and Thief of Bagdad. It'd be nice if Criterion released more modern films as part of their collection, like True Grit (2010), King's Speech or Shutter Island.

They actually do release quite a decent amount of modern films, they just happen to be foreign films.

When is the next Criterion Sale? My student budget kills me every time I see a CC DVD I want.

B&N usually does one twice a year, I believe. We just had the June one, and I think the other one comes around Thanksgiving? Not 100%, though.

Absolutely. S. Korea's Secret Sunshine and the French/Polish Three Colors Trilogy look very intriguing.

It's usually November.

But Criterion does wonderful jobs with their releases. They released a great edition of Carl Dryer's great film "Vampyr" and the packaging and supplements great, trumped only by the European Eureka's Master of Cinema line, which had a commentary by Guillermo Del Toro!

Their "Brazil" boxset is great, too. As is "The Man Who Fell To Earth", previously mentioned. "M" is also pretty *****in'.

A big  to all of this.

And I wouldn't expect any bigger movies like Dark Knight, Prestige, or Fight Club any time soon. Speaking of Fincher, though, The Game should be heading for the collection very soon.

Also, **** yes. Godzilla.

Half Nelson should get the Criterion Collection treatment also The Life Aqutic.

Oh I should of put on blu ray I already have it on dvd. On blu ray it would be amazing.

I'd love to see Ed Wood get a Criterion release. I think that'd be pretty sweet, really.
That and The Evil Dead. I feel like that just needs to happen. If they released The Blob (1958), they can release The Evil Dead.

This is great news. I didn't purchase Gojira on blu because of the transfer but criterion always does a great job with their releases.

It's been July and November.

I have never seen Benjamin Button because I thought it was a love story but I have heard other wise. Is the CC version worth buying?

I have plenty of films from their collection, although they put a hurtin' on the wallet. But, you get what you pay for. I have an original copy of Gojira from a few years back, but I'll replace it with this when it comes out.

I'm surprised "The Rock" (Yes, a Michael Bay movie) became part of the collection. I think it's great though, The Rock is the most awsome pop-corn action movies made imo, including Die Hard.

I have too Criterions, I want to have more but damn their price! Damn it all to hell!

#63 The Life of Brian
#21 RoboCop (shameless braggin incoming: I got hold of an un-opened copy of it a couple of years ago. It is my most precious possession :awesome: )

My wishlist:

6 Beaty and the Beast
10 Walkabout
17 Salo
52 Yojimbo (These two is in a boxset so the're a littel cheaper I think)
53 Sanjuro
59 The Night Porter (best coverart ever made for a film. ever.)
134 Häxan
248 Videodrome
321 The Virgin Spring
437 Vampyr
137 Gomorra
496 Che
551 Cronos
579 The Phantom Carriage
??? Godzilla
??? The Following (
Chris Nolans The Following IS coming to Criterion, they have the rights now but they are slow as hell at making the disc.)

Currently I only have a old crt-television and a dvd-player. But when I do finally upgrade to a blu-ray and widescreen I think I'm gonna go for the Blu-ray versions of these. Only think I dont like is that horrendous blue round sticker on their covers. You can peal them off right?

... Right? :csad:

Regarding the G-dude, I dabbled in photoshop a little bit:

This first one I thought this was the most iconic image of him and the film, and then the name, simple, big and monstrous and in your face. The directors name down at the bottom signifies the "bigness" of the movie itself I think.

And in this one I thought of a long distance view and that the director and the monster are equals in a sence, they both made the film together.

Thoughts?

These arent screencaps or anything, I took the images from google, I just wanted to dream a little into the future hehe

Let's see...

- no previews or trailers
- a superb making-of documentary
- good Fincher commentary
- superb A/V quality

Yep, I say it's worth buying just on those qualities alone. But it's more a drama than a love story.

What movie was #1 in the Collection?

#1 was Grand Illusion.

While looking that up, I noticed The Killer and Hard Boiled were in the first 10. I'd like Criterion to release A Better Tomorrow--my copy is an old VHS tape.

From SciFi Japan:
GODZILLA from The Criterion Collection
SciFi Japan takes a look behind the scenes of the upcoming release with details on how Criterion acquired the film, the materials being utilized for the DVD and Blu-ray, an updated press release, and an interview with audio commentator David Kalat.
