Critics' Reviews: Discussion

I know seriously, outside of here and some other fanboy sites, all I've been reading has been excitement and good reviews. And then I come here and its been completely negative and for anyone that likes the movie, its been awful to be here as we get our opinions killed and people either say we're studio plants or we don't have taste in films.

Where are the "real" reviews for this thing? I check on Rotten Tomatoes almost everyday. I have seen many reviews for Star Trek but Wolverine seems to be missing in action. Is Fox going to wait till friday to allow the critics to release their reviews? It's not going to effect the boxoffice I'm sure but if the studio had faith that these reviews were going to be Spider-Man 1 and 2, Batman Begins, TDK or Iron Man good this movie would have already been reviewed by the trades.

Celestial just posted this a few posts back.

"Because of a worldwide online embargo, you'll have to wait until Monday at 8pm UK time to read my musings on Hugh Jackman's latest outing as the cigar-chomping, adamantium-clawed superhero."

So yes there's an embargo so we'll be getting reviews next week, reviews will probably start trickling in after the premiere. Star Trek already had its premiere a few weeks back.

Well, we all know how the movies that aren't screened for critics turn out to be...:oldrazz:

This film has been screened for critics but the online reviews are embargoed until Monday. Is that so difficult to understand?

Too bad it has been screened for critics, quite a few of them but like I said and Celestial has said in the past few posts, there's an embargo until the premiere. You guys seriously seem to ignore all the posts about the embargo and just jump to conclusions.

Different endings at different theatres is about the most stupid thing that I have heard of:dry:

Have you ever seen the movie Clue? If not, you should. great film. :p

Ah, okay. Yeah I hadn't heard of that.

There's still another week. If it's Wednesday and no reviews yet, THEN it's a bad sign. :funny:

I have seen Clue but that was the only movie in the franchise. Making 3 different endings for something that will be considered canon for another film is stupid because you would have to pay 3 different times to see those scenes. It is just Fox showing us how much they appreciate their fans because the general audience won't know about this and they don't stay after the credits usually anyways.

Again, Celestial posted that the embargo is until Monday.

It's an after credit scene? When seeing X3, and Iron Man there must have been 4 people in the theater who waited for the after credit scene.

When I saw Iron Man, the theater manager came in before the movie and told everyone to stay after the credits for an extra scene.

A lot of people stayed for X3 when I saw it.

I find myself having to explain the Iron Man scene to people. :(

No understood the end of Iron Man when I saw it. I remember the guy in front us saying to his kid, "I guess you have to read the comic books to understand what that was all about..."

I KNOW ABOUT THE FREAKIN EMBARGO!

But Wouldn't good early reviews get you more buzz? I'm sorry but when studios wait till the last minute to allow critics to release their reviews that usually means that they don't have faith that the movie will get very good reviews.

Maybe the studio is wrong about their own project and the movie will get good notices but the lack of reviews is troubling to say the least. And no I'm not picking on this movie because Fox made it or because I didn't like it very much, I'm just calling it as I sees it.

Most of the after credit scenes are done for fans because they are usually the only ones who stay after and like IM, this movie, etc...it has a nod or set up to another film that you will only get if you are versed in that universe's history. So the multiple endings are made for the fans and I just don't see how making you pay 3 different times to possibly see all the endings is a way to payback your fans.

The end of IM was much more (crystal) clear than the end of TIH :hehe:

I know, but that means we'd better be deluged with reviews on Monday. :oldrazz: If by next Wednesday there have been no significant reviews, then it's time to find that dubious.

So why not wait until Wednesday to be dubious?
I often look for reviews of films ahead of release and for the majority, there's nothing at Rotten Tomatoes until a day or so before release. It's normal practice for studios to impose embargoes on the journalists when they screen films. Occasionally, a studio will avoid screening for critics, but that's not the situation with Wolverine.

Apart from the comments that make it clear that the film has been screened and there is an embargo, it just doesn't make sense for the studio to try to hide the finished version of the movie. Do you think the kind of critics that get invited to screenings are going to worry about how different the final print is from the workprint? Their job is to review the finished version not what might have been.

There's no doubt that Fox are being far stricter about the embargo than is usual, but having your workprint leaked four weeks before release is extraordinary.

Paramount clearly have a lot of confidence in Star Trek and they're using an early premiere and good reviews to market it. They haven't got a lot else to work with (reboot of an ageing franchise with a non-star cast and lots of SFX). Good for them. It's working (and I've now added it to my list of films to see).

The only sense to hide the finished version of the film until the last minute is to hide the true fact that Rothman pretty much lied about the differences between the two.

The workprint is the final version, with the reshoots in there. I'm pretty much convinced of it now. But, in his defense, what else was Rothman going to do?

He had to do something....

But, it is clear that they're not confident about the film, as a film. It's gonna make money but it's going to get hit hard by all critics...and it should for the most part.

But, Rothman does have his excuse ready.

i saw the workprint .and its not so bad to not realese reviews.

How is it not dumb? It is a smart financial move but that is about the most ridiculous thing I have seen in marketing in a while; making different prints of the movie have different content.

You answered your question already.

It's not dumb because it will make them a bucket load more money. Simple.

It is a bastard from our P.O.V. But they are in the business of making money, this will make money, therefore, it is NOT dumb.
