CW developing "The Avenger" - old DC pulp series

It somehow does not surprise me that the former President of CW, Dawn Ostroff, is executive producer.

She was very hated on this forum for being too "chick friendly" when she ran the CW. Almost ran it to the ground.

I honestly wish WB and CW would get off this tween kick and move onto regular programming.

Why not make the Benson character a gay African American blind paraplegic teenager who fights crime then....I mean it has the "essence" of the crime fighter character in that they both fight crime......:whatever:

Am I the only one who would totally watch a show about a gay African American blind paraplegic teenager fighting crime?

I'd be more interested if they'd stuck to the original setting.

Well, since they did such a great job on arrow ill probably check it out.

While the Avenger has fans since new anthologies have been selling but I would guess them to be the tens of thousands at most. Not much for a tv show and most of those fans won't like this. I don't see the point at all.

If you are going to change so much why not just call it something else? I can't see them gaining anything from calling it an adaptation.

I read somewhere she was following orders from CBS who didn't want the channel to create strong competition. Thus, go after a niche group rather than create the variety one would've expected from The WB and UPN being combined.

I love "THE AVENGER". Paul Ernst wrote some good stories back in 39-41.
Not sure this update is neccessary. Espceially changing the gender.

AVENGER had is own radio series in 40's and they changed almost every thing about it.

Why go to the trouble of getting rights to a character and then changing almost
every thing around?
Just create your own character.

I've only read the Avenger from DC's First Wave, where he was a supporting character. I think it's most important to nail that stone dead attitude he has, the way he just gets in the path of punishing the criminal, i love that, he's so goal minded man.

Unforuantly, I doubt we have much of a chance to see any real pulp adaptations anytime in the forseeable future. Things from the 30's and 40's are seen as ancient unwatchable stuff by the "anything over 24 is prehistorical" demographic of today.

The ironic thing is that people nowadays like anti-heroes more and more, and most pulp heroes were kind of anti-heroes

I was talking more of actual existing pulp characters than pulpish type new characters. I like Boardwalk and Mad Men...but i want to see some Shadow, Spider, Doc, etc......

So would i, a film or tv show that embraced The Shadow's noir aesthetic and tone could be amazing. Though i think these characters work best in the period they were created, and CW will probably just make it set in the present, which is cheaper and may be more welcoming to younger people.

Then why not have the lead be a former stage magician and skilled disguise artist whose parents are killed and she's forced to go undercover whether because she's been framed or the killers saw her but she doesn't know who they are?

She's now trying to bring her parents killers to justice whilst rebuilding her life undercover with the police hunting her along with those behind the murder and she ends up helping others as she slowly begins to discover why her parents were killed and why they're still hunting her.

Now that would be an interesting series, doesn't have to go overboard on the special effects, make it characters based with maybe her staying in the same city after a few episodes doing a sort of flashbacks to reveal where she came from where she got her training if you want revealing where her starting allies originated from sort of a human target done right by making more street level than globe trotting... might even throw in she meets some friends from her old life and making it clear where she was before and more importantly why she's staying undercover.
