Daily Planet Redux: Man of Tomorrow News and Speculation Thread

J.G. announces a follow up to his Superman with a "man of tomorrow" (one of Superman's monikers) with a Superman/Lex picture and some of you start speculating that Superman is getting the BvS treatment?
Honestly people! Based on this kind of thinking the Dark knight wasn't a Batman movie since it didn't have Batman in the title and Joker /Harvey both had huge roles in it.
A model for this kind of thing has already been set multiple times with Thor the Dark world (not the best movie but the Thor-Loki team up was the best part) or Ragnarok where it was also Thor-Loki team up with Hulk playing a major role or going even further Civil war where almost the entire marvel universe (save for the aforementioned Thor, Loki and Hulk) was featured but it never took from Cap's presence.

My suggestion to some of you is to try and not let your speculation ruin your expectation and excitement for our next Superman movie......but then again I have to remember that this is the internet so......yeah. I for one am excited and I hope the human race can behave itself and survive until 2027 so we all get another dose of hope and another 2 hr break from all the crap that's engulfing our world.

But James Gunn literally said that this isn't Superman 2 and that Superman only has a major (not central) role in this film.

It sounds like this is going to be Lex's film.

I think it’s safe to assume even in the most extreme circumstance he’ll be ‘central’.

After the Chad Lex Luthor allows the virgin Superman to live after pounding him into dust in a very straight way, the third film will be Lex Luthor: Alpha.

Eh, I don't think they'd title it what they are if Supes wasn't a main POV character. That is a moniker ALWAYS associated with Superman specifically. I just think the title in this instance will be referring to BOTH Clark and Lex, and it's a two-hander. Basically a World's Finest but, ya know, more interesting because of who's in Batman's place lol.
There is some pretty big leaps going on so far...but fun to read!

Also, the character he's sharing the screen with is one from his very own comics, so it's not at all comparable to Batman V Superman.

It's still a movie fully invested in Superman lore.

Even if Lex Luthor is the POV character or our way into the story this time.

I’m reading the stories around this era right now. I bought the Triangle Era Omnibus recently and can’t wait to dive into it.
The Triangle Era is it's own vibe and a very fun read. I always describe it as a Superman TV show as a comic lol. Mainly because the arcs are written by a whole writer's room and there's more focus on the day-to-day Metropolis/Daily Planet cast. The big events were less enjoyable to me than the little arcs like "The Trial of Superman" and Mark Waid's solo arc, "Identity Crisis" (Brainiac transports Superman's mind into the body of a mental patient who had delusions of being Superman - fun hijinks and surprisingly poignant). Just pre-orded the Vol. 2 Omnibus myself!

James Gunn says a lot of things and he trolls people regularly, hence why a lot of people have a problem with his online presence.
When he says it's not called Superman 2, he's not lying because, technically, the movie isn't called Superman 2 but rather the man of tomorrow. Just like when the rumours started circulating about the plot for Superman 2025 revolving around Superman stopping a conflict in the middle east and Gunn dismissed it. We knew later that he moved the location of the conflict into Europe due to Gaza (even though it was still clearly about Gaza), so technically he wasn't lying when he said that Superman doesn't stop a conflict in the mid-east.
Another example was when there were rumours about Ultraman being the big villain in the movie and Gunn, again, dismissed it saying something like "the main villain is Lex", again, technically he wasn't lying.
Now why didn't he just come out and say that superman was THE major character? who knows, I just know that he referred to the 4 movie arc he's planning as his 'Superman saga' so I'm not going to just draw any baseless conclusions that Superman is going to be pushed aside for Lex. I guess I'll just have to do the crazy thing of holding my judgement until the movie comes out! And honestly if what some of think is true and Lex is the star of the movie ala Ledger's Joker in the Dark Knight then I'll be just fine with it as long as Superman is well portrayed like he was in this movie.

I wouldn't mind a team up like the one we got in Action 791 (or was it 792?) by Dan Jurgens.

Another good example is the JL TAS episode Hereafter where Superman teams up with Vandal Savage:

Imagine a scenario where Brainiac knocks Superman into the future where there is a red son, hence making him useless and he'd meet a repentant Lex who originally teamed up with Brainiac to get rid of Superman in exchange for immortality and now wants to make amends.
I loved Seeing Superman use his smarts and his (literal) boy scout skills to make up for his loss of powers and survive.

I’m just going to assume that the movie will have four co-leads: Superman, Lois, Lex and Supergirl. And maybe Mr. Terrific and Lobo in major supporting roles. I’m going with them since the film has been referred to as a “Super Family” film, part of the “Superman Saga,” and Gunn has said it would feature characters from Superman’25. So while we haven’t heard about Lois, Kara or Terrific yet, it feels like all three will show up, especially since they all have made a pretty big splash so far (Kara less so than the others but most people seemed to like her cameo). And obviously Krypto will have a role, though maybe not as central. And we heard Lobo will be in it. We also heard Peacemaker will be but I kinda hope they only use him sparingly in a cameo or a relatively small appearance. I love the character but given his violent nature and how “adult” his show is (if you can call it that lol), I don’t think he should be in a Superman film that much, just my opinion.

Hoping that Brainiac is the villain, obviously (if he’s not then that would be a massive disappointment, not going to lie, though I suppose I could be sated if we get Metallo and/or Parasite). Or maybe Mongul but I think if you go extraterrestrial, you have to use Brainiac, especially since this film also follows Supergirl and there are some great stories to pull from where Kal and Kara (and Lex) team up against him.

I’m currently reading post Exile when the eradicator is playing around with Supes’ mind by making him into a cold, callous Kryptonian. The arc is called “Day of the Krypton Man” and it was great.

Has Gunn confirmed whether he is directing this film yet? I assume he is but I’m just wondering if he might hand it off to another director given the timeline and his studio head responsibilities.

Now waiting for Disney/Marvel to schedule a film for July.
They did reserve the July 23rd, 2027 date awhile back.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if they drop that date eventually since they don't appear to have anything in development that could be ready for release by then.

I think Gunn is just playing semantics here. I'm expecting it'll be a Deadpool and Wolverine deal where MoT is the de facto DCU Superman 2 but it can also technically be considered its own thing since another character is being promoted to co-lead status.

So...

Superman (2025)
Man of Tomorrow (2027)
World's Finest (2029/2030)

?

This is the way I'm choosing to see it now. My guess is, Lex isn't the main "villain" so MOT will be a two-hander, Falcon and the Winter Soldier style. Clark Kent isn't the "lead"; he's the "co-lead".

Idk...id say title it Superman: Man of Tomorrow.

Should be a Superman sequel that is secretly lex lead but not to the point where you outright notice it because it's so sneaky.

But we'll see once again how it plays out. I can't see them not making Superman the face of the film to sell to the audience.

I think the S emblem & "Man of Tomorrow" on the poster is enough to signal to audiences that this is a continuation of the story told in Superman.

Yeah, he's directing it. He said it I don't remember when and where, but he's definitely confirmed it would be the next movie he's directing.

OF COURSE. He is THE Superman director.

I think Brainiac will have a role. Either Luther some how fixes him or gives him a body but Brainiac is too big of a Superman character for a big bad in what appears to be a buddy cop movie. The Engineer is still out there and this could be an easy way to have Superman vs the Authority. Their combine powers would make Supes have to ask for Luther’s help. Especially if Luther had a hand in making them.

They won’t admit it but it was a mistake to put Fantastic Four two weeks after Superman. Just shows what the industry thought of WB/DC by surrounding it with Jurassic and F4. Marvel has the Spiderverse in June of 2027 so I think they will leave MOT alone. I actually think Marvel and DCU will actually work together on this one. Spiderverse, Superman, Batman 2, and Secret Wars is all you really need for that year. Anything else would water down those movies box office.
