Daily Planet Redux: Man of Tomorrow News and Speculation Thread

We're putting too much thought into this. Man of Tomorrow can be considered as a direct sequel to Superman for the simple reason that it will pick up shortly where the previous film ended. Featuring the return of the original cast.

Sequels can have a different titles from their original installment, Chinatown 2 is titled The Two Jakes, The Hustler 2 is titled The Color of Money, Shining 2 is titled Dr. Sleep...etc

I don't see the confusion....

team ups aren't direct sequels

was Avengers considered Iron Man 3?

its an event that takes place in the same universe involving some of the same characters, but isn't a direct continuation of the Superman solo movies story...

he's just reserving the right to continue that story in a different movie

they probably want the solo movies to be watchable on there own as stand alone trilogies/sagas even if you didn't watch any of the spin offs/ team ups, but, still work with those movies... if that makes sense?
Iron Man 2 is still considered a solo movie/direct sequel and it had War Machine and Black Widow.

I mean, he's not sharing top billing with another superhero like Batman or Wonder Woman. He's teaming up with his arch-rival. That is a Superman story through and through. This is another solo Superman movie. But for whatever reason Gunn doesn't want people to see it as that...?

I had a thought this morning:

I know that everyone is hoping for a Braniac appearance as the villain, (as am I) but with the title being “Man of Tomorrow” I could also see a left-field option being Magog.
True and Gunn enjoys taking obscure characters so it's easy to reinvent.

The only reason I think it may be brainiac is because there was that clip of a storyboard with brainiac on it. Plus, you could really connect some story points with krypton and brainiac.

We will see I guess. I just can't believe at how quick the turn around is, but I guess he knew where he wanted the story to go which is great.

The Magog idea is pretty interesting, but I think I’d prefer a Kingdom Come adaptation— Elseworlds or animated, I’ll take either.

I do think that Gunn is influenced by Mark Waid’s writing just as much as Grant Morrison, so maybe not KC but still think we could get Last Days of Lex Luthor adapted. And that story has Brainiac and plenty of space to explore the greater DCU.

Gunn also has to balance his storytelling sensibilities with what would be commercially viable. This is still a business, after all.

Brainiac is the biggest Superman villain that hasn't been adapted yet. Far more marketable than Magog.

He’s not gonna adapt any existing story. Y’all can just let go of that possibility now. There may be some elements of course, but the general story will be his own.

That’s true, and that’s fine too. Gunn isn’t the type to adapt an existing comic. But I do hope he pulls from some books here and there (that feature Brainiac).

I will say, as much as I'm not at all a fan of the Donnerverse, Robert Venditti's characterization of Brainiac in the Superman '78 comic might be my favorite take on his personality, so given Gunn's affection for the movie I hope he's read and draws a little from that if he does use Brainiac.

I’ll have to check that one out. I’ve been trying to catch up on various Brainiac stories I’ve missed.

The plot is nothing special, but the way Venditti writes Brainiac is like an extreme conservationist that makes a lot sense some of the time, which I think might be the only time I've had that thought about Brainiac lol. He was a bit less detached and computer-like than he's usually written in Post-Crisis stories, and more like living being which is always how I prefer him (and more how I suspect Gunn would write him as well).

Interesting. I really like the cold, calculating AI Brainy from the AU and books like Superman: Brainiac and House of Brainiac, as well as the fully robotic version from way back in the COIE era. But that sounds like a cool take too.

I'm not big on the emotionless Brainiac that's too similar to Agent Smith from the Matrix. Doesn't make for a very satisfying villain, imo. I don't know the details of every version, but even if it means a bit of reinvention, I'd like a Brainiac that underneath the cold intellect is capable of very human emotions like greed, envy, grudge, anger, shock. I'd like to see Brainiac pushed to a point of losing his cool because he's not getting his way, like a very selfish hoarder child.

Yeah, Brainiac collecting world "just because" is not compelling to me.

I like when he's written as genuinely believing that he's doing the right thing.

I like the idea that brainiac would intentionally destroy worlds just to collect a couple of it's cities and citizens. That's cold hearted.

Yeah, there are ways of emphasizing Brainiac’s cold outlook without making him feel dull or vapid. In House of Brainiac he talks about how he views hoarding cities as a way of preserving them.

That said, I also wouldn’t want to lose that cold demeanor completely. People compare him to Ultron a lot and some folks didn’t care for how Ultron was portrayed in AoU. While his plan was monumentally stupid (honestly I can forgive that since almost all supervillain plots are pretty dumb the more you think about them), I wouldn’t want Brainy to be quippy or feel too human (and I like James Spader as Ultron, BTW; I just want the two villains to feel very different).

Good recommendation; I just read this on the DC Infinite app. As someone not so nostalgic for the Reeve films (a little before my time), this was a fun read.

I may check out the follow-up with a Soviet Metallo

So now that we’ve at least gotten some concept art, which evil mech suit do you think will look better? Hoult’s Lex war suit or RDJ as Dr. Five-Foot-Twoom?

Really curious for casting news aside from the villain.

As much as I'd love to see more Metropolis characters like Maggie and Bibbo, I'm also not really holding my breath for them, I feel like the supporting cast will be largely the same as the first movie.
