Oooooh @BobJM , I just remembered another good one - not a Superman story but another Tomasi Mongul story called "Ring Quest." It's actually an awesome Green Lantern Corps arc (post-Sinestro Corps War) where Mongul got a Yellow Lantern ring and used it to go to the Black Mercy host planet, create his own brand of Black Mercies that feed on fears instead of dreams, and send thousands of their seeds out to various unsuspecting planets to ripen them for conquering.

Can't post the gag reel here due to language but it is delightful and I'm SO glad David and Nick are headlining MoT together because their chemistry is amazing. That is all.

The Warworld Saga is the most magnificent main continuity arc Superman has had in two decades (rivaled only by Tomasi/Gleason's Rebirth imo), so yes, that is absolutely it for me. It's like if the original Mongul arc was actually awesome.

BUT ALSO, more people should read Peter Tomasi's two-part Mongul solo story from Showcase '95 called "Exit to Eden." Seriously under-appreciated little gem, imo. Even though that was technically current Mongul's predecessor, they all represent the same ideas really.

Mongul's extremely compelling to me because he basically represents the nightmare scenario of where everyone worshiping Superman for all the wrong reasons (his powers and ability to win every fight) could lead, and how terrifying that can be as a predominant worldview, beyond what we've seen on Earth. Mongul's power fantasy is literally a religion to the people of Warworld, and PKJ does a great job fleshing out what kind of society that could really create. Watching Superman choose to give up his power, be willing to lose and even die repeatedly just to show these people one-by-one where their real value lies is one of the most inspiring things I've ever seen the character do.

Also, Warworld Saga's \S/ wasn't just the Kingdom Come/Authority \S/...

I know this isn’t the casting thread but as our resident Mongul expert, I’m curious who you want to see in the role. I’ve been saying Bautista for a while (as other have) and it seems like a perfect storm with his relationship to Gunn, his desire to play meatier roles and just the fact that he LOOKS like Mongul but his recent comments made me worried that it won’t happen. Regardless, I’m wondering who you envision as Mongul when we get to him.

I know this isn’t the casting thread but as our resident Mongul expert, I’m curious who you want to see in the role. I’ve been saying Bautista for a while (as other have) and it seems like a perfect storm with his relationship to Gunn, his desire to play meatier roles and just the fact that he LOOKS like Mongul but his recent comments made me worried that it won’t happen. Regardless, I’m wondering who you envision as Mongul when we get to him.

Bautista would definitely be one of my top picks. However, given his recent body transformation I get the impression he doesn't want to play these big hulking beasts anymore so he might prefer some other role in the DCU. My first pick is probably Javier Bardem. It's not a similar enough character to be typecasting from his other villains, but I do love listening to that guy explaining a good twisted worldview. Anyway, Mongul would probably be a half-CGI/half-practical creation so it wouldn't necessarily need to be a huge dude. Just a huge a presence. If Cosmo Jarvis doesn't get Batman (my preferred role for him), he could be a pretty solid Mongul too imo.

Yeah, Bardem’s name gets thrown around for Darkside a lot but I have no desire to see anything Darkside-related for a long time, partially because of the way Snyder ruined all of that but also because I just want to see more SUPERMAN villains show up in these movies and not just big JL threats (at least in the movies that are primarily Superman-centric). I feel like his rogues gallery has been sidelined forever and I’m hoping we’re finally tapping into it.

Jarvis is also an interesting name for this. I have say I don’t want him as Batman at all but I like the Mongul suggestion.

I guess the engineer will be back in the sequel. Hopefully she is given more to do as I think her character was a bit of a throwaway.

I obviously have NO idea what the plot is, but I know how I'd like it to go.
Brainiac discovers there are two Kryptonians on Earth. He wants them for his collection...

Lex being Lex detects Brainiac's ship first and makes contact. Lex soon discovers they have a mutual enemy, Superman, so he agrees to help Brainiac capture superman in exchange for alien technology. Brainiac agrees.

Brainiac arrives. A Long battle ensues between Superman and Brainiac drones.
Superman takes them out fairly easily.
The justice gang, and other heroes are also seen fighting the drones.

Brainiac, thanks to lex, uses a kryptonite beam to capture superman. Lex watches from below. Ecstatic that Superman is beaten..

Lex is then "beamed" up to Brainiac's ship, He's gleeful that superman is captured.
He asks for his reward.
He's then told by Brainiac that not being killed is it's own reward, And he's beamed back to metropolis.

Brainiac proceeds to shrink cities to collect before destroying the Earth.
Lex has been double crossed.
The military fights back, but they are no match for the Brainiac drones.
The justice gang fairs a little better, especially guy.

Lex didnt want this. He contacts the justice gang, and comes up with a plan to free superman.
This is where we see the lex exo suit.

I want to see Darkseid again when they adapt the New Gods proper. Kirby-isms and everything.

If Mongul were to be mo-cap (and in all likelihood he would be), at the expense of being generic, I would like to see Andy Serkis take him on. I think his physicality and voice suit Mongul well.

Gunn made some comments about seeing her again and I found her pretty generic but that Digital Charcuterie guy on YouTube was speculating that maybe Brainiac might have infiltrated some of her tech once she intercepted Superman’s parents’ message. If so, then maybe that’s how Lex could get involved in the next movie.

I think David Harbour would make a good Mongul IMHO.

Yeah even though Harbour is playing Frankenstein I don’t think that would prohibit him from also playing Mongul if Gunn wanted to use him.
