Daily Planet Redux: Man of Tomorrow News and Speculation Thread

Oh sweet, I know this dude from Babylon Berlin and All the Light We Cannot See. Good actor. This is a nice twist, I was really worried it was going to be Matt Smith, the most boring choice imaginable. Excited to actually not know what to expect from his portrayal, as it almost feels like another Chukwudi Iwuji type pick which I am ALL about. :mrk:

I know people like to complain about Gunn’s casting choices, but frankly, I love that he still screen tests the really important roles and doesn’t just hand out offers to the first name actors he thinks of.* Makes his casts more interesting to me. 🤷‍♀️

*him handing out so many of the less important roles to his buddies, however, I’m less a fan of.

Im sure budget has a lot to do with it. If he can find great actors on the cheap because they are new the producers would be very happy.
I mean, it's not like you can really outright see the budget onscreen to its fullest potential.

Nonsense. I'm sure Chris Pratt appearing as Steve Trevor won't happen. :o

I think Gunn should prioritize casting the right actors for the roles, as he envisions them. Not the biggest names or who generates the most buzz on social media.

That latter mentality is why a lot of casting directors and studios cast people based on their Instagram followers, and why Marvel casts Padro Pascal to play Reed Richards and don't even bother to change his look to suit the character (because they are more interested in having Padro star in their Marvel movie so they can put him on the press junkets).

At the end of the day, its about the work. Plenty of actors out there who are just as talented as the "prestigious" actors you see in every project. They just haven't gotten that big break yet.

Stop prioritizing clout. Prioritize talent.

My friend has recommended I watch Babylon Berlin in the past. Will finally give that and some of his other work a watch too.

Also wondering what some of your favourite Brainiac stories are? Most of my knowledge of the character comes from the DCAU, My Adventures with Superman, and Syfy’s Krypton.

One of my favorite characterizations of Brainiac is actually in the Superman ‘78 comic. It’s less the traditional cold/robotic take and more of an extreme conservationist whose cause almost seems noble. I found it refreshing.

My favorite run that just happens to feature Brainiac in it is Morrison’s Action Comics.

90’s Brainiac: the “Brainiac Trilogy” (technically ‘89) from the triangle era and of course “Panic in the Sky,” which it leads to. An underrated little Brainiac arc from Mark Waid during that period was “Identity Crisis” (not to be confused with the big event with the same name)

Most will recommend Geoff Johns’ Brainiac, but I find that story to be the most generic and boring of any Brainiac tale I’ve read.

Looking forward to giving these a read! Appreciate it!:D

A Geoff Johns comic has all the flavour and literary value of a mouthful of stale white bread?!? What?!?

You guys can crap on Johns all you want...his Lantern run and most of the events within it wailed! And his JSA crushed for quite a while.

The rest...well it was hit or miss!
