Sci-Fi Dan Trachtenberg to direct Predator film ‘Badlands’

I’m down for a different take on a Predator movie.

But those that aren’t probably won’t like it dipping itself into video game and comic book movie territory even more than Prey did.

This looks decent, very different from Prey and the heavier use of CGI does show in the trailer. I will 100% be there opening weekend I'm just not sure I will fall head over heels for it like Prey but we shall see. Everything about the Predator and Elle's character looks great. Interested to see how the lore is expanded in this one.

Producer Ben Rosenblatt told IGN that Predator: Badlands gets away with a hopefully audience-swelling PG-13 rating while maintaining the series’ trademark violence because it focuses on synthetics, the Yautja (the name of the race of aliens who assume the Predator role), and various other monsters, rather than humans. Indeed, not a single human character is hurt during the movie.

“We'll see where it ends up, but our hope for it is that it can be a PG-13 that feels like an R,” Rosenblatt said. “That's kind of our hope. And really, what that's about is just being able to broaden out the audience for a movie like this.”

“We don't have any humans in the movie and so we don't have any human red blood,” Rosenblatt continued. “So we're hoping that's gonna play to our advantage. We're going to go as hard as we possibly can within those constraints, and we think we'll be able to do some pretty awesomely gruesome stuff. But in colours other than red.”

What that means is we’ll see plenty of the green blood from the Yautja and the milky substance that pours out of the synths from the Alien universe, but no red human blood.

I hope this film doesn't bomb but I have this sinking feeling it will.
I think of the two big action movies opening in November, Running Man has a better shot at box office success than this since it has wider appeal.

I kinda get this approach. I wouldn't normally approve of a Predator movie being PG-13 but in this case we will have blood just not human blood so it makes sense.

Generally not a good sign when they they do this to something that is known for being violent and with a strong horror element. Its certainly going to turn off a few with this news, I guess though they are trying to maximise profits and it doesnt seem many humans were going to be in it anyway so the gore would be more Alien related anyway. Still it is slightly concerning for its reception and box office potential overall how this news goes down.

I see the opposite. Predator isn't a huge franchise, but it has a foot print and Prey seemed to go over well on streaming. We are in a bit of an monster IP resurgence with Alien as well. So here's hoping.
