If they do two a year, Defenders would be May 2017. That's a reasonable time period. Certainly, I can't see one a year (a 2019 Defenders date).

Any fresh news on this? Sucks we didn't have a costume reveal during SDCC.

Do we know what the running order will be?

Hello. I'm pretty new to Daredevil, having only seen the movie and a only read/owned Fall From Grace. I'm interested in getting to know more about the character. What run/paperback/arc/storyline do people recommend the most? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Guardian Devil and the story that followed introducing Echo are good ones to check out.

Born Again is one of the seminal Daredevil stories.

I think Daredevil: Yellow is a fun little re-telling of his origin.

There Is so many to list. Some of the best are : the Elektra saga by Miller
Born again by Miller
The Ann Nocenti run
The fall of the kinpin
I'm not a fan of guardian Devil ( seems like a Born Again rip off with a lot of plot hole to me. It has a pretty good intro, That being said. Would have worked with Mister Fear ) but the story has some fans here. Quesada, who worked on the serie, Is the penciller
Bendis and Brubaker runs are really good.
Daredevil yellow by Loeb ( who also work on the serie ) Is a good intro to the DD first days

If you want a " lighter" Daredevil, I recommend you the Kesel run and the actual Waid run.

I'm sure I miss a lot of good stories...

As a lifelong DD fan, I would say if you want to read just one DD TPB....go straight for Born Again by Miller and Mazzuchelli. Most other arcs have taken their cues from that story.

Haven't been following too much yet, but does it seem likely Elektra will be in this?

Miller is the one everyobdy needs to read, Nocenti is great and has classic Romita Jr. art, Bendis because no one does a better crime comic.

I like Guardian Devil myself but the above are much better. Save it for last unless you are a Kevin Smith geek.

I haven't read Brubaker yet but you can't go wrong with him.

I'd say Brubaker is someone who does better crime comics than Bendis, but to each his own

Frank Miller's Daredevil Vol. 1 and Frank Miller's Daredevil Vol. 2

Obviously, the up front investment is a bit more, but you get better bang for your buck. As far as I'm concerned, it's still the best introduction. You start somewhat in the middle of things, but so much of Daredevil was defined by Frank Miller that you aren't missing much. Also, you start with Miller only penciling, so you can appreciate Daredevil before Miller (when it was almost canceled) compared to how things changed almost literally overnight.

I can give more advice going forward, since I'm in the process of doing precisely what you're talking about, but that's a good way to start. I'm not even saying you absolutely need to buy Frank Miller Vol. 3 (to complete his first run), but I enjoyed it too. Born Again may be one of my favorite storylines, but absolutely do not start with it. You need to appreciate the character first since it's really a psychological drama of Matt Murdock.

The rest of my thoughts are long, so I'll put it in spoiler code:
The Denny O'Neil and Ann Nocenti runs have not been done justice by Marvel to put them out in an affordable compilation. In fact, the ones they've done are fairly butchered.

Denny O'Neil has "Loves Labors Lost," which is a jumbled mess of random comics that aren't even all by him. I like the individual stories, though. I would have dropped the random Frank Miller story and added All Your Laurels You Have Riven Away instead. You should also check out The Gael (#205) and the Micah Synn storyline (#202, 204, 206, 210-214). I hope they release that in TPB.

Then comes Born Again, which I love. I read it before Denny O'Neil's run, which you can do with pretty much no problems. There will be a few spoilers, though. The comic right before the story begins is quite good too. You can see it in either Loves Labors Lost or Born Again, though (which also makes me angry at the poor treatment of O'Neil stories).

I personally enjoy Ann Nocenti stories, but her run is also plagued by lack of compilation. She also has storylines that end fairly underwhelmingly. Those are her biggest weaknesses. She's usually more controversial because she's a fan of giving characters long, awkward political speeches. But that reputation is overblown, imo, and often comes off with a far greater degree of nuance than people give her credit for (her mouthpieces are often people who deliberately come off crazy when they talk this way, she isn't pretending it's normal speech). One of her strengths is in creating secondary characters and villains who, while not superpowerful, are intriguing. Some times, the secondary characters and villains are the stars in this drama of Hell's Kitchen and Daredevil is just someone who happens to be part of it (another criticism). She also enjoys bringing in more fantastical enemies, such as Mephisto, which is very different from Frank Miller's run.

If you want to go with a TPB, go with Daredevil Legends: Typhoid Mary. But then you have to buy Lone Stranger because that's a cliffhanger. But then that's a cliffhanger too, so you should buy #274, 278, 279, 280, 281, 282 for an epic ending involving Mephisto and the Inhumans (and a literally journey into hell). You can buy 275 and 276 for a cool little story involving Ultron, but it isn't necessary. Under no circumstances buy 277. I bought that and it sucked. Her strength is really in her early run: #236, 239-244, 248-252.

D.G. Chichester: I've not read his stuff yet. I heard his Last Rites storyline is good, but the rest not so much.

Other can speak on Vol. 2 better than I can. I will say I didn't really like Hardcore all that much, although others like it more than me.

Whoa. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

I ended up getting Millers first Daredevil volume and so far my first impression if positive. I have not had a chance to read it but I dig the art. I also placed DD Yellow, and Born Again on my wish list although I'm interested in getting to know more about the Kingpin and the Fall of the Kingpin is something I might add later along with some Typhoid Mary stories.

I have read Brubaker after reading the Winter Soldier arc in Captain and I absolutely loved it. I will definitely check out his material in DD as well.

Keep in mind that Miller's first story that he wrote is #168 (the story involving Elektra). But the art is Miller's penciling and Klaus Janson's inking throughout. A creative combination that was quite cool. I'd probably skip the Spider-Man stories in the front, they're more frustrating than not.

BTW, for those familiar with Bendis's run. I've only read the Daredevil Hardcore storyline. I enjoyed it at first, but I don't think it holds up with subsequent viewings. It just feels too sparse as a story. Maybe as an ongoing story it builds from what came before and what came after, I don't know. But the story was highly praised. Is his work as a whole on about that quality or are there better stories than that one?

I hope the show will not be slavishly influenced by Miller's run. The Miller era is rightfully revered for giving a creative/sales boost to the strips and introducing new thematic territory for the character that continues to this day. That said, I really hope that the series is able to strike a balance in its portrayal of the “worlds” that Daredevil inhabits. Whatever “grittiness” exists in the Hell’s Kitchen environment, have some righteous, decent folks in the mix. I have no interest in any “Huggy Bear” characters. (or what was the guy’s name in the comics? Turk?) It would be awful if every other female character were some form of a hooker, stripper, mob moll, dominatrix or madam.

I like Turk. I would be disappointed if he wasn't in. Miller has a reputation for grittiness and darkness, but characters like Turk and settings like Josie's Bar kind of contradict that notion. You could also see it in some of the dialog. The stories were serious and took Matt to dark places, but the comic got much grittier and much darker after Miller (Bendis in Hardcore is a good example, but D.G. Chichester's Daredevil was essentially the Punisher compared to Miller's).

Miller did have more strippers, but he also had a waitress/bartender and an assassin to make up for that. Miller has a reputation, but I think a lot of what people think his run was like is based on Miller's non-Daredevil works more than what you actually read. Maybe it was the comics code or Marvel creative control (fwiw, his non-canon Man Without Fear story is grittier) isn't all that gritty relatively speaking.

Although with Waid involved as a creative contributor, I think it'll strike the right balance.

Perhaps in the MCU, Gordon Ramsay could be shown to be the driving force behind Hell's Kitchen being a fiery furnace.

I remember when people were making Daredevil jokes about that show, now its been flipped on its head.

It would actually be cool if he did cameo. It's the kind of thing Marvel would do. I bet everyone wants to get into a Marvel movie or show now anyway.

Has anyone brought up how cool it'd be if Jennifer Walters could get name dropped in the courtroom? Or just to Matt in General as another fellow lawyer?

I hope the legal drama side of the show is that good that you'd want to even follow the series for that aspect alone. I could envision this series potentially winning an Emmy.
