Since Fincher's directing it, the movie could easily be decent, if not good. But I think I'd prefer that Facebook not have the satisfaction of having a movie made about it.

Columbia Pictures and director David Fincher have set its core cast for “The Social Network,” the Aaron Sorkin-scripted drama about the formation of Facebook.

Jesse Eisenberg will play founder Mark Zuckerberg, Justin Timberlake will play Sean Parker, the Napster co-founder who became Facebook’s founding president, and Andrew Garfield will play Eduardo Saverin, the Facebook co-founder who fell out with Zuckerberg as the social network became a financial juggernaut.

Production will begin next month in Boston and then move to Los Angeles.

Scott Rudin, Michael De Luca, Dana Brunetti and Cean Chaffin will produce. Kevin Spacey is executive producer.

The pic focuses on the evolution of Facebook, the social network created in 2004 on the Harvard campus. And how overnight success and wealth changes the lives of the classmates who created it. The trio were the subject of internet rumors as Fincher zeroed in on his leads.

Eisenberg, who went from “The Squid and the Whale” to “Adventureland,” locked the coveted role as Zuckerberg as Columbia prepares to release his latest film, “Zombieland,” on October 2.

Timberlake was most recently seen in “The Open Road,” and Garfield in the Terry Gilliam-directed “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.”

Eisenberg’s repped by ICM, Timberlake by WME and Schiff Co., and Garfield by CAA.

This should be biting and brilliant. I am of course a huge fan of Fincher and Sorkin and given their backgrounds in media, Sorkin's vicious social and cultural commentary combined with Fincher's sarcastic noirish style (see Fight Club and Seven), this could be one piece of brilliance.

I am not an avid user of Facebook, though I do have an account to keep in contact with long distance friends and know of upcoming events. But the social network concept (facebook, twitter, myspace, etc.) is really changing media. I'm not saying they're the finest examples and quite frankly it is so new and early we don't quite yet know how to use and capitalize off of it as a tool for society (or as a windfall for corporations). But It in less than a decade has completely changed how media works in this country right down to election cycles.

It is quite important, even if the results seem trivial now.

Also does anyone notice the title Social Network may be an homage to the title of the classic film, Network? Is this a clue that Fincher wants to update that incredibly cynical and black comedy dissection of 20th century media for what it is today? Perhaps.

I think this film may surprise alot of people; I doubt Fincher will sign on if it's only about Facebook. Just like his movie Fight Club isn't just a movie about a fight club, this movie won't just be about FB.

Although I initally thought(and still think to some degree)that making a film about an online chat website was kind of ridiculous. I'll wait for a trailer to see if I feel this was a waste of time for Fincher, when he could be doing something a lot better.

Probably shooting entirely location...plus Fincher is always using some new camera or some other tech that costs a ton.

Zodiac cost like $80 Million.

Seems to be a good character film. I'm looking forward to it, mostly because of Fincher and Sorkin.
