It's crazy to think Cooper went from *****e guy on Wedding Crashes to what he's making year in-year out.

Personally I hated Meat Train and didn't think much of Cooper in it.

It just goes to show that it's hard to predict where an actor's career will go.

The key word is "actor." It's his job to play different kinds of roles/characters. He's voicing a foul-mouth, gun-toting, badass space raccoon next year.

You know how a lot folks are a actor stinks up one role and then that's the role everyone will judge him on regardless of his work done in other movies afterwards. For god sakes Oscar winners are judged on roles in which they were bad.

Nobody starts out doing the big ****. Most people either start doing commercials, bit parts on tv or like have one line in a play.

Some people still act like Marion Cotillard is a terrible actress because she had a goofy death scene in The Dark Knight Rises, as if she hasn't been excellent in various other movies. It's annoying.

Yep and it's these sort of folks who are the vocal minority.

I remember people holding Bale against his John Connor performance for a while. Thankfully his turn in the Fighter silenced those naysayers. How is Bale in this flick? All the attention seems to be on Lawrence. Can he get an oscar nom?

I actually thought Bale was fine in Terminator Salvation, though his role was poorly-written.

I never got the big deal about that death scene. I was too busy paying attention to the big important things that made TDKR not a good film but that's just me.

Actors don't always have good performances of course. Sometimes that's hard to remember when you are caught up in the pile on.

People underestimate how much writing and direction can have to do with it.

It's possible but the Best Actor category for this year seems loaded. It's tough one this.

You are correct and I'm not going to pretend I have been guilty of not remembering that.

I don't see Bale getting an Oscar nomination for Hustle unless the academy just adores the flick and it's just a giant smash. I'm still of the mindset that Lawrence is going to be the sole acting nomination.

big loud imax camera
filming on location where the street is closed down
filming less takes

in the movie it was her bad acting. maybe Nolan didnt shoot more takes. maybe Nolan picked the worst shot.

Neither Maggie Gyllenhaal, Marion Cotillard, nor Tom Hardy are anything to write home about in the Nolan Batman trilogy, IMO.

Jodie Foster in Elysium kind of comes across like she's forgotten how to act.

True but it's a week away from release and I know there are a lot of folks who love a Rotten Tomatoes score it's currently at 95% certified fresh. So from that stand point the critics are really loving it.

Bale's not getting a nod because the character is a little too funny. It gets darkly comedic but it's not like a hugely method thing...I think if an actor has too much fun in a role as opposed to getting all stoic about it the academy doesn't consider it outside of comedy.

Personally I find the idea of Bale playing a character who's not intensely serious kind of a nice change of pace for him.

Lawrence looks to be having a lot of fun and has a 95% chance at an Oscar nom.

That one particularly annoys me because to me, she's one of the top 4 actresses in the business, period.

I haven't seen La Vie En Rose, A Good Year, or Rust and Bone, but I thought Cotillard was excellent in Inception and Public Enemies, and perfectly fine in The Dark Knight Rises until her admittedly kind of goofy death scene. But considering her overall level of acting, I have no problem dismissing that as a bad take.

Honestly, Tom Hardy is worse in TDKR than Cotillard, to me. Which I am also willing to dismiss because I've seen Hardy in enough other things.

Just out of curiosity, who are your other 3?
Meryl, Cate and Tilda. If we want to keep going, Winslet would be #5 followed by Charlize. I promise I don't have a list somewhere, we were just having a pretty in-depth discussion on this at work one day. :woot:
