Good picks. I especially like Cate, Winslet, and Charlize.
 It's worth noting that my place of work is an indie/foreign film theater, which shows a lot of French films, so the Cotillard love is particularly strong there, lol. She was brilliant in La Vie En Rose, Rust and Bone, Love Me If You Dare, and even in her small supporting role A Very Long Engagement, which pretty much stole the entire movie. I really wish she'd get some meaty roles like those in her stateside films (which is why I was all excited when I first heard she was being considered for the role in Gravity), but I understand why she doesn't. Oh well, as long as she keeps working in France where those roles keep coming, I'll be happy.

I think Kate Winslet is wonderful.

And I really like that Charlize Theron is one of the most gorgeous people around, but she deliberately does some roles that make her unglamorous or downright unattractive. To me, it shows she's a serious actress who doesn't want to just coast along on her looks.

Kate Winslet is da bomb oh and acting wise she's awesome too.:woot:

Yeah, or even something like Young Adult, which pretty much deconstructs that attractiveness to turn it into something ugly.

Yea but Lawrence is an Oscar darling now.
I know but I still don't think Bale having fun has anything to do with his having a slim chance at an Oscar nom. He gained weight and shaved his head, they love when actor's do that sort of stuff, they love actors in David O. Russell movies and liked Bale enough to give him an Oscar for playing a hammy character. I think it's going to be hard (not impossible) for him to get a nod because of intense competition from other actors.

They like Russell so despite the blow of not getting a SAG nom I won't count him or any of the non Lawrence cast out. The only one who has zero chance is Renner.

I don't care for Renner, personally. I don't think he does anything that various other people can't do better.

I like him, but I don't find him to be anything particularly extraordinary.

I don't ever fully give up on most actors but Renner is kinda a one hit wonder to me and that one hit was The Town. I'm sure Russell will drag something good out of him though.

Out of the handful of reviews I've read about this, not one mentioned his performance.

He's also the one who didn't get a Golden Globe nomination while the rest of the cast did. No love for Renner. :o

The reviews I've read only mention him in passing. Renner would have to have given a next level performance to get a special mention in a cast like Hustle's. He has two Oscar noms and has played in hit films so he is doing just fine for himself but I just find him shrug worthy most of the time. Maybe he picks bad or mediocre roles to play I don't know.

It's funny because I keep forgetting Renner is even in this thing, I guess the star power of the other four really outshine him for me. Personally I have yet to see Renner in anything outside of The Town where I actually thought he was a great actor, aside from that everything he does just seems to be pretty average.

Personally I find the idea of Bale playing a character who's not intensely serious kind of a nice change of pace for him.

It was. And he was pretty hilarious. Without giving anything away, the scenes between him and Jennifer Lawrence were my favorite parts of the film. I'd love to see them do another movie together.

I think the likelihood for an Oscar nod for the cast is this:

Lawrence (sure thing)
Cooper (possibly)
Adams (possibly)
Bale (longshot)
Renner (no chance)

Lawrence is a sure thing and could possibly be a threat for a win if she didn't win last year. Great performance for a showy role, current darling of Hollywood, open category, etc. The Supporting Actor category is a mess right now so Cooper could possibly sneak in if the buzz for AH is very strong. Adams' category is tighter but she can still sneak in. The AMPAS clearly love her. Bale's category is the tightest. There are like 12 actors contending for 5 spots. I think in a weaker year, Bale could've easily grabbed a nod for either this or Out of the Furnace.

The 70s are when the actual ABSCAM scandal happened.

Yeah, but this is a heavily fictionalized version, it's not an historical account by any means so I stand by my statement that the time period seems pointless.

Amy Adams is no chance of an Oscar nod, not off this performance anyway.

Jennifer really held her own in those scenes with Bale, despite the obvious age differential between the two.

You speak as if the performance is the only reason to get an Oscar nod. We know that's not how the AMPAS roll... ;):oldrazz: BTW, great review.

she's that bad?:wow: She got a Golden Globe nomination.

I never said she was bad, she just the weakest member of the main cast. Let me repeat - she is not bad, she just didn't deliver a performance I believe to be award worthy.

Bale, Adams, and Lawrence all have excellent chances of being nominate for Oscars, and Cooper has a decent shot. Adams and Lawrence have decent chances of winning, but it's no sure thing. I think that Chiwetel Ejiofor is the major front-runner to win Best Actor for 12 Years a Slave (as well he should be), so Bale's chances are slim there. Cooper's chances are also slim as he is going up against strong competition, including Michael Fassbender also for 12 Years a Slave.
