I think after Escape from the Planet of the Apes there wasn't a decent entry to the series until RotPotA in 2011. I also would say both Conquest and Battle are solidly worse than Burton's bad attempt at a remake. At least Burton's film had production value to it. None of them make any real sense though.

And I have yet to see any of them achieve what I'd consider greatness. Planet of the Apes comes the closest to that level but it was made at a time when B movies were still solidly on their own level rather than a decade later when B movies started getting the A movie treatment with stuff like Jaws/Superman/Star Wars/etc.

Burton's film is an extremely flawed movie with extremely great elements within it. Seriously that makeup work is insane.
I'll also say that the actors portraying the apes did pretty good with what they had to work with, especially Tim Roth. The humans? Not so much.

RISE has held up for me quite well. I think it's great. Looking forward to seeing it on the big screen again Thursday. I'm also looking forward to seeing Judy Greer play an Ape in Dawn.

Quotes from Reeves about how he took the story in a completely different direction and recentered the film around Caesar a few weeks before shooting was set to start.

Reading what he said about what he wants to get across in this film makes me very excited to see if he pulled it off. He's a very articulate and thoughtful guy.

The first 30 minutes is only sign language and the apes. No humans...that is amazing. The fact that Fox studios went for that really makes me smile. Fox has come a long long way from the Rothman days.

That's awesome, but I thought the apes could speak now anyway? Or is that only when they speak to humans? At least we know from the trailers that Koba will talk as well as Caesar. I'm also curious to see if Cornelia will talk, since Judy Greer is playing her.

my birthday was this past Friday but I brought all the movies to plant of the apes expect for the remake & the new one I already got it any way. now I got all the squeals and the original movie for 20 bucks at amazon

Reeves describes it at the link I posted as very much the beginning of speech. Showing the emerging ape culture instead of just jumping to an established ape society is what Reeves pitched and what brought him to the project.

They are conversant in sign language, and they can speak human words but from what I've seen its very much a mix of speech, signs and ape communication. Very interesting.

Yeah, the growing of verbal skills should be gradual. It wouldn't make much sense at this point for them to be rattling off reams of dialog. It'll likely improve with succeeding generations.

Yep and its very broken english like when Caesar says "APES! Strong! Together!" They have complex thought and concepts, but they havent begun to use complex speech and grammer. Their vocal abilities and vocabularies still need to catch up with their enhanced cognative abilities. From what I have seen it looks like Maurice is running a type of school in Apeville that teaches vocab lamguage literature and maybe even philosphy that he has picked up from human books. There are words written on rocks and other things and he is standing at a rock that looks like he is using it like a blackboard and he has an audience. And in another clip he is shown reading a book with a human.

That's where my thoughts on that lead, even though the original continuity had the Lawgiver living long after Caesar.

Anyways, I wonder if Maurice will speak verbally. If I'm not mistaken he was played by a woman.

30 minutes of just the apes and sign languages with a few words is awesome and bold but I can just imagine some people ****ting on it with many of them walking out within 15 minutes due to no patience.

I love the idea though and reminds me of Quest for Fire where the whole movie had cavemen&women speaking in cavemen/woman language with English subtitles,Also a lot of body&sign languages.

This is true character development at least for the apes!

Yeah, Maurice is still being played by a woman, but I guess they could use a male voice actor. I would prefer for Maurice to remain the quite wise orangutan. If he ever does speak I don't want him to be a chatterbox.

I think the Transformers-movies were made for those people... ;)

well it's Tuesday already and where are all the reviews? Usually after Sunday we start getting deluged but there's still less than 20 on RT.

My local theater still isnt selling tickets for this film. They always have tickets available in advance. Im curious to see how many showtimes this film gets compared to Transformers ridiculous 17 showtimes a day.

Will be seeing this in about 2 hours! Hazzah!

If you can, stay til after the credits and let us know if there is a scene.

I tend to not do the whole staying after the credits thing coz the clip usually shows up online in a couple of days. But if it's early enough on I'll stick around. Anyway, film is about to start, full review in a few hours. :)

The last film was more mid-credit so I assume they'll stick to that format?

He talks about a lot of that stuff here as well but there's also some new stuff thrown in(like a bit regarding Francis Ford Coppola).

Only two new reviews on RT today.

One is luke warm and the other is the typical rave.

I agree with the rave about one thing already: the movie titles are out of sequence. Dawn should have come before Rise, at least as far as the titles go. But it's a done deal now so no sense crying over spilled milk.
