Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Part 2

How the hell was Koba's story "shoe horned?" He more or less drove the plot of this film.

Because at some point they flipped a switch and he went from an ape that was rightfully wary of humans to a tyrant out for personal power. What could have been an amazing slow transformation was ruched through, and he ended up as a cliche movie villain who wants to take over for the sake of taking over.

Not at all, but ok then.

^ $73mil OW (compared to Rise's $54mil [I think]) is disappointing?

Also, loved both shots.

I also think $73 mil is pretty mediocre..but, like i said before the insane WOM this thing is getting will almost guarantee it won't have a huge b.o drop off next weekend. A lot of people saw it this weekend and they're going to tell all their friends and family members how good it was……

You know what this movie reminded me of, especially the first 10-20 minutes of it? Apocalypto, which is another film I love. I love seeing an alien(to us at any rate) culture just going about it's own routine. Quite fascinating.

This. Loved that film also.

I'm seeing this again today. Hopefully no ****ing baby this time.

It's only in the movie theater where I hate people. Though ironically enough, like Nolan recently said, it sucks when there is a near empty theater on an opening weekend.

I'm not so sure.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 was supposedly great but the legs are rather unimpressive.

But Koba was always a loose canon due to his mental and physical trauma, it was very believable he would seek revenge when the opportunity arose.

He didn't even slaughter every human, he simply imprisoned and terrified them. It was an eye for an eye.

I feel like heretic saw a completely different movie then I did.

It's really not that mediocre at all. Planet of the Apes is a big franchise, but not exactly one of the biggest and it doesn't fit the bill of being 100% kid-friendly either. Still, the franchise is continuing to grow and has proven to be a big money-maker with a solid reputation.

$104 million worldwide for opening weekend is pretty solid for a film with a $170 million production budget. The opening weekend BO exceeded expectations and the opening weekend BO of the last film by a significant amount, so what exactly is mediocre about it? It was never going to have a record-breaking opening weekend. The fact that Dawn's opening weekend box office wasn't too frontloaded is actually a good thing, because it means the film will most definitely has solid legs as word of mouth continues to spread and more people get around to seeing it. The quality of the film is also helping it play well to different demographics.

For the 8th entry of an old franchise, I doubt the studio could be much happier with how this one has turned out at this point. The future of the series is very promising.

How the heck has the box office been mediocre?

[Blackout]Koba didn't want to take over just for the hell of it, though once he was in charge there is always the allure of power to be considered as a motivating force and it's a REAL thing. But for the most part he wanted power for the same reason most despots do initially, he feels certain that his way is the one and only right way to proceed. In his mind that justifies anything that he does. It's a typical mind set. Ends justify the means.[/Blackout]

Koba was already an ******* in the first flick, it just slowly started to come out over time. It wasn't his fault, but they were all mistreated apes, he just took it the worst.

And also, did that final fight feel very Disney-esque to anyone? Not the violence, but how it played out.

Disney-esque? You'll need to elaborate further.

I can see that similarity. But Professor X never killed Magneto.

73 million is a very strong weekend take. Box office receipts have seen a sharp decline over the past 2, 3 years.

I definitely got Lion King vibes between Koba and Caesar, but a few scenes also reminded me of Disney's Tarzan.

Koba was essentially Magneto.

Kind of, but Koba was more extreme. Magneto wouldn't have killed his own kind in cold blood the way [BLACKOUT]Koba murdered Rocket's son, or his attempted murder of Caesar.[/BLACKOUT]

Koba wasn't just wary of humans, he out right hated them. This was hinted at in Rise too. When he has a malevolent sneer on his face as he pushed the chopper off the bridge, and how he attacked Franco's character and seemed annoyed that Caesar stopped him.

What makes Koba great is because you can understand him, to an extent.

He should have killed him when he had the chaaaaaaaance. :argh:

JP IMAGINE IT

*Years after the events of Dawn and Caesar is old and awesome (but can still have plenty of awesome years and movies left in him). The Apes colony has now expanded into a booming civilization and lives in the city/ruins of San Fransico.

Koba has somehow survived the events at the end of Dawn, and Caesar knows of this, but the two never talk and no one knows of Koba's survival other than Caesar and a few trusted Apes.

Koba sneaks up on Caesar while they're out hunting for food.
Koba: Old...Friend.
Caesar: Friend.

He was already challenging Caesar's authority even early on in the film, and became increasingly critical of his leadership as time went on.

But again the term "shoe horned" is nonsense as the conflict with Koba wasn't tangential, it was a primary part of the story.
