Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Part 2

Got back from seeing it. Actually fairly surprised how not villainous I found Oldman. I came in expecting him to be the one that f***ed everything up, but nope. Kirk Acevedo knocked over that first domino and Koba flipped the whole ****ing table the dominos were set up on.

****ing Oldman, just when I thought his character was a complete throw away and one note, he has that scene when he looks through his old pictures of his family and friends.

You have to really zoom in to tell Maurice is CG, that's how good it is.

Nice to see it's only the 2nd film this summer to get 2 weekends in a row at #1.

I wonder if Kirk Acevedo is on the speed dial of every casting director in Hollywood under "Hot head" as his specialist role.

Loved this movie but annoyed me that I couldn't find one asian person in the movie considering San Francisco has a large asian population. I guess we were all wipe out from disease

I guess the last film had Frida Pinto.

Ya'll left as soon as the **** started.

Yes, I know your reason is probably the correct one but just wanted to soften the blow. :oldrazz:

^I had heard about it before I saw the movie in a negative review on RT and I thought I'd have a problem with it as well but the animation of the spread of the virus(Indiana Jones style) did much to mitigate all that so I didn't mind it at all.

So far as a comparable run for another movie this summer it's looking like Maleficent will be the pacer for this film as it has consistently been just slightly ahead of that film each day for the last 11 days now and both weekends have kept that same 5-10% more edge on it. Maleficent made $18.5M on it's 3rd weekend so I think DotPotA will be looking at a $20M weekend coming up if all thing keep holding as they have. By Sunday it should have passed the $170M mark domestic which is what it was budgeted at. Not sure about the OS so far as they've been doing a very slow roll out to avoid competition from the World Cup.

Anyway, Maleficent is about to crack the $230M DOM barrier and will likely finish in the mid $240M's. Hopefully DotPotA can crack $250M.

Can we take a second to talk about the monkey doctors' surgical masks? I mean seriously, MONKEY DOCTORS.

I thought it was just something the females wore as an accessory.

There's alot of concept art floating around about Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, most of them have the Apes with clothing, maybe they thought it was too soon to have Apes wear clothing.

I got an idea.

I liked how those masks were decorated and made of beads, more ceremonial. Basically it seemed like the apes, many of whom came from medical testing backgrounds associated the masks with that kind of work but didn't really grasp their meaning and instead offered a reinterpretation. A small detail but I really dug it.

I thought it was alittle too soon to have medical apes working on other apes. I guess I could have accepted it without the mask but in 10 years could they have really learned to be able to heal each other, given what we saw they were damn near killing ceaser's wife. small complaint and not a huge slam against a great movie.

I loved all the hints and nods towards the ape civilization shaping up similar to that of the original series. As a long time Planet of the Apes fan, some of those made me want to jump out of my seat.

The climactic fight between
Caesar and Koba
was amazing on its own. It's hard to think of another climactic fight in film that I've been so emotionally attached to in recent years. Visually it was stunning, and it had enough build up behind it to hook me in.

Reeve and company did so much with so little, and that's what makes it great (or perhaps brilliant is a better word).

A small criticism: I hated the fake newscast at the start.

The one thing I didn't like about it was that they included Barack Obama. For one thing, it kind of dates the movie. Second, given the time frame set up by the last movie, by the time the simian virus goes airborne Obama would no longer be in office.
