(Not sure if this is the right place?)
My 3D Foundations Prof at RISD brought in John Mathews, a former student of his, in to talk to some students about his work as a sculptor and about his work at DC Comics. He mainly does a lot of Batman related work, but has done other DC Characters and well as the Nite Owl figures for the new Watchmen Movie. This was such a treat for me, since it was due to myself and a friend talking about Batman and comics in class that he asked this guy to come in
His work relating to Batman is so great! I was amazed at how much of it I've seen on the internet and comic book stores, and I never imagined that it was all the same guy. Though I will now, since he pointed out to us that DC is very good about crediting artists, so all their names are listed on the packaging.
Once the other students left, my friend and I got to talk to him one-on-one, and it was really great. He gave a lot of insight to how working for DC is, what it's like working with all these great characters, etc. He's a very talented, friendly, and overall great guy, and I'm very appreciative that he took time out to come and visit us.
I mentioned to him how much I loved his Women of DC: Harley Bust, that Harley is one of my favorite characters, and the sculpt he created is one of my favorites of her because of how well she was crafted and the character captured. Being the generous guy I've learned that he is, he insisted on giving me one and signed it for me! I couldn't be more honored . My friend was given his Batgirl Bust from the same line, which is also another favorite, along with the original cowl he sculpted for it! What lucky Bat-Fans we are today Needless to say, I'm not going to display her until I get back home, and know she won't be all messed up from art supplies in my dorm.
His work with Batman (that I've seen) deals a lot with the various animated series, The Black and White Series, AniComi series, and with numerous comic book adaptations. He is quite talented, we're lucky to have him working at DC with Bats.
He also showed us his Catwoman women of the DC Universe Bust, which apparently was Wizards #1 toy in some recent year.
Besides that, he also brought in a plasticine model of Catwoman from the new comic cover line that is apparently coming out soon. It's really beautiful work, I look foward to being able to buy it.
So SHH. Discuss this mans amazing work with Batman?
