DC's 2015 Event: CONVERGENCE

If this is pulled off correctly it could end up being a lot of fun. Will also provide much needed closure for a lot of fans once and for all.

I love the sound of this convergence stuff, and while I will not read every mini, a lot of them sound great.

I've not kept up with what this event is. I keep seeing the reveals of the individual issues and thought they were just little glimpses of past versions of the characters to fill the gap of the DC move. I didn't realize that there was an actual story and event to go along with it. That makes me a lot more curious about all this. I didn't care about it all initially because I didn't read a whole lot Pre-New 52, but I'm curious now.

Len Wein and Kelly Jones are doing a Swamp Thing two-parter and Jeff Parker and Timothy Truman are doing a Hawkman two-parter. This is perfect. Regardless of what the overall narrative of this event is, I'm buying the hell out of these.

The only thing most of us want closure for is the New 52. If not, i won't be giving DC a single penny again. I have no interest in what they have going for them now.

People who hold this outlook are a minority. They don't give DC any money so they aren't a priority for them. Most of these people weren't buying any DC books before Flashpoint anyway which makes their complaints even more comical.

I was more referring to people like me who bought over 30 DC titles each month before Flashpoint. Those of us who had awkward or anticlimactic and rushed endings to some of our favorites will finally get some closure.

Don't be acting like the majority opinion when you're clearly in the minority. DC's sales are still better than they ever were before Flashpoint. While some of the changes DC brought are rather cringeworthy, the New 52 was a necessary thing that needed to be done. DC has always been revamping their continuity every 25 years or so (in the 1960's with the Silver Age and in the 1980's with Crisis on Infinite Earths) so this is nothing new. DC needed something to reinvigorate their sales and the New 52 has been a massive success in that regard (at one point, ****ing Aquaman outsold every Marvel comic).

And look at how DC is treating their books. Even though we got relaunches with New Suicide Squad, Deathstroke, and Teen Titans, DC has been keeping books like Batgirl, Superman, and Green Arrow with their New 52 numbering even though the massive creative directions actually warranted new #1s.

DC is being pretty damn dedicated to the New 52 and if you think that DC is going to reboot their continuity in an event written by Jeff King, a first time comic writer, and Dan Jurgens you're only deluding yourself. The last two times DC rebooted their continuity they used their #1 writers in Marv Wolfman and Geoff Johns. They're not going to give something with such a massive impact to two writers who are on the low end of the totem pole. Not only that, but this event is essentially DC trying to fill in the gap while DC Comics transitions from New York City to DC Entertainment's HQ in Burbank to make it easier on the editorial staff.

If there are going to be any continuity changes (and that's a big IF in my opinion), they will happen next year in Geoff Johns' Darkseid War. And even then, expect a minor continuity shift like Zero Hour, Infinite Crisis, and Final Crisis, not drastic ones like Crisis on Infinite Earths and Flashpoint. If there are continuity changes, expect most of the New 52 elements to remain intact.

That's exactly how I feel. I'm more than willing to accept the New 52. While it has brought changes that I don't like, it has also brought on a lot of things that I do like. But I do hate how a lot of my books just suddenly ended without a proper good bye like Booster Gold (who I feel like should remember the pre-Flashpoint Universe), the lack of a send-off for Wally West, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc. Hell, the only book that I feel like got a proper ending was Secret Six.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and maybe i was a little hasty in suggesting that everyone hated the new 52. But I've met allot of fans that do hate it and have many good reasons as to why they don't like the new creative approach that dc is taking, be it everyone having unlikeable or unappealing personalities, event comic after event comic, characters with no personalities, etc and i share their opinions. If you don't feel that way that's fine, but i politely disagree with your opinion.

The fact of the matter is that very little in the new 52 (outside of this new multiversity series) appeals to me as a fan and i doubt that will change any time soon. I'm not one of those people who hates on dc comics for the sake of hating on them, but it's hard for me as a fan not to see the flaws in the reboot and criticise the things i don't like. Especially when the other alternative, in my personal opinion, has been doing just fine without a reboot. The new 52 does not appeal to me at all. People might still insist that those of us that aren't interested in the reboot or what it has to offer need to ''just give it a try'' or ''just enjoy it.'' But i don't feel like it's that simple and to be honest, it isn't. Like i said before I'm not trying to start a flame war or cause trouble. Just stating my opinion, that being that i simply do not like the creative decisions made by folks like Dan Didio, Scott Snyder and others in the company in regards to writing, storytelling, character building and the DCU in general. The personalities of the characters usually makes quite a few of them (Superman and Capt. Marvel/Shazam in for example) act like selfish and standoffish jerks. Sometimes i feel that most of the characters from the Injustice game act more like the characters i know and love. (the ones on the earth with the non tyrannical superman that is.) But that's just my opinion being stated here. If you want to enjoy the new 52, that's your choice and more power to you. But as a long time fan of DC that has given the new creative approach a try and decided he doesn't like what dc is doing in terms of characters and stories (for the most part), i have to respectfully disagree and say that it doesn't appeal to me for the most part. If I unintentionally worded my feelings in the wrong way and made it seem like i was complaining for the sake of it, I apologise for it. I hope that clears things up and that we can agree to disagree. :yay:

Here's the thing, there is a lot to criticize about the New 52. And I do mean A LOT. Until Geoff Johns took over Superman, the Superman line was completely directionless. Scott Lobdell's Teen Titans was utterly atrocious. DC's editorial micromanagement on the the books written outside of the Johns/Snyder circle of trust has created some massive creative inconsistency and has alienated a lot of talented writers from working with DC again. Many (if not most) of the redesigns are really, really ugly. What they've done to Harley Quinn is a god damn crime (and the book being really successful makes me sad).

But there have been a lot of good things too. The New 52 along with the surge in high quality indie comics has really revitalized the comic book industry. Unlike how Marvel has been treating Marvel NOW! where so many books have been getting utterly pointless relaunches (Fantastic Four, Wolverine, Hawkeye, Daredevil, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Secret Avengers, Uncanny Avengers, Captain Marvel, etc.), DC has been pretty consistent in keeping the numbering of their books, something that makes it very easy for me as a collector. Characters like Aquaman are moving out of the joke realm thanks to the New 52. Runs like Scott Snyder's Batman, Geoff Johns' Aquaman, Brian Azzarello's Wonder Woman, Joshua Hale Fialkov's I, Vampire, and Jeff Lemire's Animal Man have been amazing.

And another thing to take into account is that vocal comic book fans are nothing but a loud minority. The the internet loud mouths were the majority, I'm sure that many high quality but low selling books would still be around while the low quality but high selling books would be cancelled and that Marvel would stop publishing events.

You're feelings are not completely unwarranted. My point is that in regards to the New 52, there really shouldn't be an extreme one way or the other in how to view it. It has good and it has bad. It has some really great and some things that make me want to rip my hair out. I don't think that we should be lumping all of the New 52 as one thing and just determine whether or not to hate it, but look at it book by book.

we just caught up on the last 3 months of dc comics and they have been improving ioo

especially the batman line which was the worst thing that ever happened to me

arkham manor and gotham academy and gotham at midnight and new batgirl and new catwoman are soooooo good and p. decent tbqh

this event looks dumb ioo but we get multiversity before that which is p. amazing so far so whatevs

I'm super excited about this event as I miss the pre-New 52 versions of many characters, in particular Superman. I think lots of these tie-ins will be very enjoyable for me, as long as it doesn't turn into some kind of slaughter-fest.

Wait, are theyretconing the universe again?

Wait, are theyretconing the universe again?

DC needs two months of filler that won't require much editorial input (because they're all moving to a new office across the country), so they commissioned a bunch of "What If" stories about alternate versions of characters.

they are not retconning the universe, but convergence may result in some changes, the same way zero hour did.

Im confused. Are they rebooting the line again, but this time going back to the old continuity or will the New 52 remain? Will there be some merger? Not liking that they have Babs back as Oracle but I loved her return as Batgirl

there is no going back. Will they merge some stuff? It could happen. But it won't be more than that. The way I see it, it's more a farewell to the pre new 52 continuity, so that people will have closure.

It shouldn't be a farewell as much as a way to go back and revisit what a lot of long time fans prefer. You can have the New 52 crap. If they publish multiverse stories focusing on pre New 52 DC every few years, that will give me my DC universe fix. I guess I could settle for that.

I already have what I want, and I want it because it's better. I'd rather DC keep looking forward than focus on old crap that they got rid of.
