Hi everyone, now that his time is up, I was wondering if we could talk about the cinema, music etc that defined the era. No need to go into who voted for who or whatever, just what the defining art was.

for example, I think “the boys” is definitely the defining piece because it was all about realising what we were told to idolise could become twisted or manipulated.

oddly enough I’ve also heard people refer to Taylor Swift’s reputation era as defining the trump era because it was all about “look at what you made me do”

The issue is most of the stuff released was already in the process of being developed prior to him getting elected. You won't really get the full idea of what defined these last few years for a least another year or two, although the virus has probably extended that. I honestly don't think the last few years have been all that great to be honest, nor was there anything that memorable that directly related to real world politics, or at the very least influenced art to any major degree. But that IMO has more to do with studios being overly reliant on their franchises than anything else.

Without having seen a lot of it, probably the Star Wars sequels (literally Resistance and the theme that the older generation failed), Black Panther, Boy Erased, Crazy Rich Asians (Hollywood being and proudly being inclusive) and Joker (sympathetic to but more concerned about populism), Thirteen Reasons Why (very angsty/guilty and full of conflict and yet also some hope).

black panther definitely! That’s a great example as well as Star Wars

Chiming in with the Black Panther conversation, this line really says it all:

I think that’s the way to handle it honestly. I would rather hear the stories of people who had to face him down or thwart him instead of getting biopics of him basically saying he put kids in cages because his dad didn’t go to his fifth birthday and he was really sad or something
