Which brings me back to my question: why are you so anti-Ellis?

I haven't read Transmet or Planetary yet (both are at the top of my to-read list), but I don't see the "treat characters as worse than pond scum" writing style in Thunderbolts or Nextwave. If there's any writer who fits that description, it's Millar.

I haven't been reading Thunderbolts, so I can't comment on that, but if you can't see it in Nextwave, I can't help you.

I'm also not a fan of Millar, by the way.

I'm not a fan of Millar either, yet I seem to buy everything he writes...

And I don't know where you see the sub-pond scum characterization in Nextwave. It's not even supposed to be a serious comic anyway.

It isn't Ellis' fault if other writers decide to take his clearly out-of-continuity parody and make it the basis for the character's personality; though, for my money, the current Ellis-inspired character is the only remotely enjoyable version I've ever read; determinedly cartoonish, of course, but fun.

Van Lente's portrayal of MODOK wasn't anywhere near as bad as Ellis' portrayal of the Machine Man. Regardless, I'm pretty sure Nextwave's status has been shifted to being in-continuity, so Ellis' characterization stands as a legitimate portrayal of the character. Which is, frankly, horse****.

The thing that's really galling, though, is that there's absolutely no reason Ellis couldn't have simply made up a new character. His Machine Man is literally so dissimilar to any other version that he could've been a different character and no one would've ever thought, "Why didn't they just use the Machine Man?" Hell, he did it with Dirk Anger in the place of Nick Fury in the very same comic.

Because he thought it'd be funny to portray Machine Man as a racist in what he intended to be an out-of-continuity book?

Yeah. Only it wasn't. And now it's in continuity. In conclusion: **** Ellis.

That's some messed up logic, there. What Ellis intended and what Marvel did might be two completely different things, but the former can't really be blamed for the latter.

I know, but the characterization originated with Ellis and it bothers me because I'm apparently one of the four people in the world who actually like the Machine Man. Instead of actually putting any thought into the character, though, Ellis came up with, "Let's make him Bender!"

But do you understand that Nextwave was just a parody? It's not Ellis' fault if the story has been shifted into continuity, because that obviously wasn't his intentions.

Even so, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but different writers come up with different interpretations of characters all of the time. Grant Morrison had a wildly different characterization for Magneto; are you going to say "**** Morrison"? Garth Ennis had a very different take on Nick Fury; are you going to say "**** Ennis"? Comparatively, Ellis' characterization of Machine Man--however radically different it may be--is excusable, especially within the context of a parody.
