Diamond List For September 10th, 2008

Well, I don't know the long term ramifications or anything, but obviously, it's costing people an extra buck for the cover and, from what I can tell of the MAX and MK minis I have, that's the only difference.

I know there's apparently better paper for individual pages (I really can't tell the difference myself) and higher paid talent (I guess that is a decent enough excuse, but I have no idea how one would confirm that point), but really, it seems, at the end of the day, that's it.

I mean, I know it's only an extra dollar and would be barely noticable if they did it regularly at regular price, but it just seems like such a sorry way of milking consumers to me. It's not needed and is just one of those things that I just kind of shake my head at when I see them.

What can you do, though, I mean obviously not too many people are all that upset about it, as the minis sell well enough for them to continue the practice.

As much as it may suck to know that they are essentially just milking the readers for an extra buck on what's probably their best-selling title, I don't really care about an extra buck enough to not buy SI. If I'd known the story would be so bland, on the other hand...

Well, even though I know me as an individual isn't going to stop it or anything, I usually don't go for the stuff when I see they have that purely on principal, unless I'm really looking forward to it. Like Magneto's Testament.

If it's something that somewhat looks interesting or just slightly peaks my interest and it has that, I'll probably skip it or trade wait

I saw a preview of the Magneto mini and decided I'm not getting it. It occurred to me that I really don't care about Magneto's childhood. It's like Wolverine's past--not knowing is as much a part of the character as knowing would be for other characters, so it's not really necessary.

I am because Greg Pak is awesome.

Not sure about that one, really, I've always wanted to know more about Magneto's origins, but that's mostly because I'm interested in the holocaust and the suffrage of Jews during pre and during WWII. Plus, I do like Pak, as well.

I saw a preview on Newarama, and I can't say it was all that impressive, and if I wasn't interested in that time period and the character, then I would probably overlook this pretty easily myself.

It occurred to me when I read his name in that preview. It was just so... plain. That's when I realized I didn't care about Magneto's humble beginnings, I only started caring about him from the moment Anya died in their burning house and he slaughtered the mob that stopped him from getting to her.

I had actually completely forgotten that, but I'm not sure if Testament is his canonized origin or not. Since it's part of the MK print, and I didn't think those were suppose to be canon.

They've been saying that this would be THE definitive origin. From the interview with Pak on the mini, it sounds like he's really going the extra mile to make sure he does the best job he can possibly do. Obviously there's going to be a certain amount of pressure involved when writing an origin story for one of Marvel's most popular villains and Pak knows expectations will be high.

With that in mind, I think Pak is going to outdo himself here.

Both Action and All-Star Batman aren't coming out tomorrow, so it's an empty week for me. My wallet won't mind that.
