Why did he say screw the critics a couple of weeks ago it's like he knew whats the reviews are going to be

It is because he already saw the movie. He knew how good it was. :o

He could be the next Scorsese muse with his Christian missionaries in Japan movie, I say he use that as a way out. Too bad, I like him in the role, but the series isn't soaring.

Well he read the script which means he must knew it would suck but he's under contract and playing his favorite superhero so what can he do?

Well he probably liked the script? sometimes you don't know how it will turn out on screen untill you see it but at the same time don't act like it was a terrible script, yeah the film had flaws that conflicted but alot of big emotional moments were done well and stand out

jeez guys

Yeah well Brandon Routh was under contract.

I thought Superman Returns wasn't bad. I thought it was inbetween good/ok. It fits the timeline after Superman 2 and stays true to the world. Would have liked to see what a sequel who do because then you could tell if the people involved are good or not.

Only thing I disliked was Superman having a kid.

Of course he did; they all do. You always know when you've created or been a part of something special, something you can be proud of. It's self-evident. Conversely, you know when you've been a part of something mediocre as well. Is it bad business to mention as much, however? You bet, especially during press time.

Anyway, the answer to this sort of question should always be a resounding 'yes'.

The only people to whom this wouldn't apply are shills and sycophants.

this thread is ridiculous, andrew like anyone has the right to like the script just like alot of people liked the film, but to automatically try and make him sound like a liar by saying well with the reviews being mediocre he must have been lying about the film being good... its the only explanation, it was obviously his view of the film is positive and he was proud of it, but at the same time there was alot altered in the final film, esp if you look at the amount of scenes that were not in the actually film but were in the trailer

there was alot of good in the script so don't act like its the next catwomen or batman and robin

Robert Pattinson would be a better example

"...The more I read the script, the more I hated this guy, so that's how I played him, as a manic-depressive who hates himself."

"When I read it I was convinced Stephenie was convinced she was Bella and it was like it was a book that wasn't supposed to be published. It was like reading her sexual fantasy, especially when she said it was based on a dream and it was like, 'Oh I've had this dream about this really sexy guy,' and she just writes this book about it. Like some things about Edward are so specific, I was just convinced, like, 'This woman is mad. She's completely mad and she's in love with her own fictional creation.' And sometimes you would feel uncomfortable reading this thing.

LOL nobody hates Twilight more than the cast of Twilight. :D

But yeah, I'm sure he knew it would probably be a stinker.

Is that for realz? :wow:

I am a big admirer of Andrew Garfield. He's a great actor, he brings a lot to the character of Peter Parker, and even if this film doesn't light the world on fire, he's done plenty to be proud of as Spider-Man. All the amazing stuff he's done visiting charities in the like in full Spidey attire is almost better than the movie itself. Being Spider-Man has probably been about more than just the scripts.

He was in The Social Network, so he knew. He knew from the first line of the script:
"The move opens with zoom out shot of Richard Parker watch."

This. It was okay. One of Singer's lesser films, but middle-of-the-road with regards to Superman films.

I don't think it would be nearly as hated if not for the kid.

y'all are reading a lot into what he said. andrew has said this about other movies he's been in and about himself. it's a personal thing, it has nothing to do with the quality of the movie. it's his way of not looking for validation for his work in anyone but himself.

Even though you make a lot of sense I am sure some dramatic poster will ignore you

was this even necessary

did you even watch the interview and listened to what he stated?

Andrew Garfield is amazingly talented (no pun intended) and it makes sense to brush off criticism for something he loves. Still, he has been championed by critics since Boy-A and into the Red Riding Trilogy, which certainly helped raise his profile before getting projects like Never Let Me Go and The Social Network, which of course led to Spider-Man.

I do think some critics have their knives out for this movie. But most are generally fair to summer openers and gave SM3 and TASM1 positive reviews--though nowhere near as good as SM1 and SM2 level reviews, because they weren't as good.

This is just a bland to mediocre movie. I think Garfield is excellent in it, but he must know that it has problems, hence his reaction like this.

Have to say Garfield's comments about the script are quite funny now:

12/2013: "I sat with [writers] Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman in a restaurant for lunch in New York, and they pitched me this movie… And I was crying. I was really emotionally moved by what they said to me. And I think a lot of my emotion was because these two guys love the character as much as I do."

7/2013: “This time we have this very, very good script that makes a lot of sense.”

Maybe the script was better before things got cut? Maybe he liked it personally?

Critical reception means jack-****. Box-Office performance and word-of-mouth will determine its success or failure, and thus far, both have been positive (and the film still hasn't been released in the U.S. yet).

Huh? and yet people here are worried that this movie is getting a lot of bad reviews.

Critical reception do matter. Don't you think word from the critics don't get across to the studio and the public. Of course they could do.
