Discussion: Global Warming and Other Environmental Issues

Actually on futurama "Global Warming" was real and they "Solved it" by dropping a giant ice cube in the ocean each year until halley's commet was out of ice. Then they pushed the whole planet a little further back in it's orbit... I watch too much TV.

Too many Simpsons episodes. Nuclear power is very safe in this country. The biggest disaster we had was 3-Mile Island. No one died from it. No one got sick from it. However, because people are so alarmist, Nuclear power is being crippled. It produces more energy and no carbon emmissions. The waste can be transported and stored safely.

Indeed too much TV, for the both of us. Is it hard to dispose of the waste product? I know it can be stored but can it be used for other purposes?

I think the problem more so is disposing of its waste, America continues to create nuclear waste with limited space to store harmful materials. You can't keep buring it or storing it in the "pools". :bh:

Just read up on a few things about the storage of nuclear waste.

Found it interesting that the current oil-producing endeavors can create some toxic waste like nuclear powered stuff does.

Also not much happens by way of storage, it's just kept in containment pools....and there may be plans to stick it under ground?

Yucca Mountain facility will help take care of that. Not opening for a while, but it will provide a safe place to store it.

I am sure at some point in the future humans will find a use for it.

suddenly I'm flashing back to an episode of that old cartoon "Mighty Max". Aliens came to earth and demanded our toxic waste...

LOL There is a good use for it I guess.

But that's a good thing right. If they find it then that's good.
many great things in the world were discovered by accident: Teflon, Penicillin, Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Post its were invented by accident. guy was looking for a stronger adhesive, and found a weaker one. he put it on papers as a temporary adhesive and realized how useful it was.

The paper clip! That must have been a good one to invent...

Someone should invent a way to solve global warming.

Well this is going by some American scientist that came over to Australia for lectures on Nuclear power and he made these points. A) The containment pools are seriously neglected and faults have been found in them. B) The area's that are suitable for storing underground are greatly deminished by certain circumstances ie some element that shields its harmful effects needs to be present, native land, ect. C) The time it takes for waste to loose it's harmful effects the country would have been overloaded with nuclear waste with nowhere left to store it.

I mean accidental, as in people come to excavate land in the future and find waste, but are then exposed to it.

I hear a lot about global warming believers--VP Al Gore, in particular--telling the world that global warming is "settled" science. But, there are plenty of scientists and others out there that are not convinced the matter is settled, at all.

But, have we really even had a real debate?

If global warming is such a major problem and so certainly happening, then why not have a real debate to shut the mouths of the naysayers--or the global warming group? Get the best minds on both sides of the issue. Air it on the major TV networks. I, for one, would definitely tune in to listen to both sides.

I would think that such an important debate over such an important issue would merit national coverage and attention. What do you think?

Why a debate? Around 90% of the scientific community say global warming is a reality 10% say no, The majority of the scientific community believes in global warming, a small percentage does not. Majority wins, case closed.

Time was when majorities said it was OK to have slaves.........they were wrong.

There was a time when the scientists thought the world was flat, wrong.
There was a time when the scientists thought the world was cooling, wrong.
There was a time when the scientists thought if you went more than 70 miles per hour, you were dead, wrong.
There was a time when the scientists thought tomatos would kill you, wrong.
There was a time when the scientists thought cocaine was good for you, wrong.
There was a time when the scientists said cigarettes cured asthma, wrong.

Yes point taken - it could all be so wrong. Time will tell I guess.

What are you trying to say here?

Cap America can beat global warming, I think that is where he was going with it.
Interesting considering that some of the industry under the banner of LexCorp is responsible for spewing countless tons of C02 into the atmosphere. I smell a cross over!!!

Captain America v Lex Luthor! Over global warming.

It would be a great story.
