Based on polls it looks like Republicans have given up on being moderate. The moderates are basically pariahs at this point.
But if you look at how bad McCain and Romney lost, it's easy to realize why Republicans abandon centrism and fully embrace red meat rhetoric.
While the far right stuff does help win more states during the general election it seems to have hit a ceiling with most American voters rejecting insurrectionist and big lie candidates during midterms. This will continue to get worse for the Republicans during the 2024 general election with young voters energized over reproductive rights and Trump/DeSantis policies.
