This hearing seems rehearsed & not including the fact that everyone in that room wants the bill to be passed

It looks like it wont get voted on today. Some people want to vote on it just to be able to go home for Christmas though. That is ********. Get a new career

It seems that they're at least trying to patch SOME of it. Not enough, but still, every tiny bit helps.

So I wrote my congresspeople, and my Representative got back to me.

To quote an excerpt of his response:

"Please rest assured that I understand your concerns about the potential impact this bill could have on free speech and technological innovation. While I believe it is very important to protect intellectual property rights, we must not do so at the expense of our Constitutional rights. Should I have the opportunity to vote on this legislation in the House, I will be certain to keep your views in mind."

I had to read that twice to realize he was saying what he was saying because I was expecting just a form letter response (like I got from one of my senators), and slightly scared he would come out for the bill.

So, if anyone else lives in the 18th District in California, write Rep. Cardoza, because he seems to be siding against SOPA. And if he's just telling me what I want to hear, write him anyway so he can't get away with giving lipservice and has to back up what he's said.

And if you haven't written your Representative or Senators, do so! You need to find out who in your state is against this to spread support for them, and who's against this to drum up support against them. This is a Congress that has so pissed of their constituents, that their jobs are on the line more than they realize. And we need to make them realize that fact.

Got to love the fact that the fate of the entire internet will be determined by whether or not a few people feel like showing up to work on a Wednesday.

I found it hard to believe that at the first hearing people wanted to vote & get it over with just to be home in time for Christmas :o

Why is this not getting more exposure? This is an important matter yet you don't hear much about it.

Indeed. Though some issues are less noticed than others, for example, the thread about hundreds of soldiers remains being found in a dump doesn't even have a page worth of posts yet.

They are obviously paying off the media to not say anything about the fact that the Government is trying to ruin the Internet

Not the government. The media corporations who don't want to compete and are using fear mongering to trick the government into protecting their revenue streams. It's the same ******** argument about how they'd all go out of business and the music/tv industry would collapse when cassettes and VHS were introduced.

Hell, it's the same argument they made in the 19th century when the player piano was introduced!

though sadly this time they're going to win

Um...if Obama doesn't veto both of these bills, SOPA and PIPA, the American people are gonna wake up and be pissed. Any of these bills pass in their current form and no veto, Obama just sealed the victory to the Republican GOP. Cause all they have to even say is they would get rid of those bills and whammy bammy, win.

Because the YouTube video player link never works for me...

How many times has Obama said he would do something & not do it ? I would rather trust my dogs then Obama :o

I suspect anonymous proxies based in other countries could be used to access blocked material if this went through?

I'm sure you guys are familiar with James Rolfe (Angry Video Game Nerd) of Cinemassacre.com, well here's what he said regarding this.

By the way both SOPA and Protect IP are scheduled for a vote this coming Wednesday on December 21st this week.

I’ve remained silent in this issue for a while, but each day it’s becoming more urgent at an alarming rate. Congress is trying to pass two bills that will change the face of the internet. One is called Protect IP, but the one that’s been a real hot topic lately is SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act.) It’s an attempt to stop online piracy. Of course, I do not support piracy, but the way the bill is written is very broad and open for interpretation.

According to what everyone’s saying, it will affect the whole internet. It allows the government to step in, on behalf of major corporations to take down any website or video that they want. It seems like under the broad language of these bills, it would mean doing movie reviews, video game reviews, or anything of that nature would become illegal. There already exist fair use laws that permit the partial use of copyrighted works for criticism or educational value. But somehow these new bills, if they pass, would trample all over that, and fair use would no longer exist. Yes apparently that would mean no more AVGN videos. No nothing. But don’t worry about me. Worry about the internet. The internet has been a source of innovation. These bills are anti-progressive, would cause mass job loss for all small companies online. They are written with a very out-dated business model.

I usually prefer to stay out of politics. I just want to provide entertainment. I want you to come to this site, laugh and enjoy my videos. The last thing I would ever want to do is send everyone into a panic. It’s especially hard for me to write this, since it comes during the holiday season. I thought I’d be able to wait until January to speak up, but the SOPA bill keeps gaining momentum. It’s supporters are trying to push it through as fast as possible. It was suddenly scheduled for a vote on December 21, THIS WEDNESDAY! I thought they’d at least wait until after Christmas. It’s not the ultimate last step the bill has to go through, but it’s crucial one and it’s important that we’re all aware of it and try to do something about it.

I’m not the best person to explain this. Here are some videos you should watch that are informative.

Here's a link explaining why SOPA and Protect IP are very hard bills to kill (no pun intended):

If this passes, can we say goodbye to movie and video game video reviews all across the internet? Goodbye to Thatguywiththeglasses, Cinemassacre, Redlettermedia, etc?

I googled up some articles on this site, and Forbes reported that Anonymous has obtained and released the "docs"--address and phone number--of the gentleman responsible for SOPA. Lamar, I think his name was.

I hope Anon continues to fight the good fight against the bill.

All Anon and those who use similar tactics do is justify arguments for increasing internet security and having harsher punishments for internet crime. They are counterproductive trolls.
