Disney's Mary Poppins Returns

Eh, I'd love to see Anna Kendrick in the role but I'd be cool with Blunt.

Oooooohhhhh myyyyyyyyy gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadddd!

Best news ever! I hope she takes the role. She would be so badass at it!

I wonder if they can slip in a Julie Andrews cameo somewhere. I mean they would have to wouldn't they?

So who will be playing Bert?

Haha oh gosh where are we going to find one of those?

Just please, no channing Tatum!

Was hoping and praying for Blanchet.
But this would/could be interesting.

Honestly, if Joseph Gordon-Levitt can do a good British accent, and he probably can, he'd make an amazing Bert.

That's intriguing. It wouldn't surprise me if they tried to get Ryan Reynolds. He can play a sexy clown but I've never heard him sing. He sang a bit at the end of deadpool and I think he might be able to do it.

I would definitely prefer a British Bert though.

My #1 choice would have been Anne Hathaway. But Blunt is a damn fine actress, with a pretty good singing voice as well. So I'd be completely fine with this.

I still think that Julie Andrews should make a cameo in the film, if she's interested of course.

Lin-Manuel Miranda cast as "Jack" a lamplighter

Man, that guy is everywhere!

Sure hope all those people who paid huge sums for "Hamilton" tickets aren't too disappointed when he has to take a few months off for filming.

Oh right, I heard somewhere he was playing Bert. I was going to say. He doesn't seem very bertish.

I can't wait to see what he can do. I love that they're casting people who can sing so far and not just actors who say they can sing (ie Russell Crowe)

OK..it's official:

Emily Blunt & Lin-Manuel Miranda to star in Mary Poppins Returns

Walt Disney Pictures has officially announced that Golden Globe Award winner Emily Blunt (Into the Woods, the upcoming Girl on the Train) and Emmy, Grammy, Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton,” “In the Heights”) are set to star in Mary Poppins Returns, a sequel to the studio’s 1964 classic, Mary Poppins, which will be released on December 25, 2018.

Reuniting the director and producing team behind Disney’s hit film musical Into the Woods, the film will be directed by Oscar nominee, Emmy and DGA Award winner Rob Marshall and produced by Marshall, Emmy winner and Golden Globe nominee John DeLuca and Oscar, Emmy and Tony Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Marc Platt. The screenplay will be written by Oscar nominee David Magee based on The Mary Poppins Stories by P.L. Travers, with Oscar nominee and Tony Award winner Marc Shaiman composing an all-new score and Shaiman and Emmy nominee and Tony Award winner Scott Wittman writing original songs.

Blunt has been cast as Mary Poppins and Miranda will play a new character, a street lamplighter named Jack. Drawing from the wealth of material in P.L. Travers’ seven additional novels, the story will take place in Depression-era London (when the books were originally written) and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

“I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation,” says Marshall.

P.L. Travers introduced the world to the no-nonsense nanny in her 1934 book “Mary Poppins,” which Disney adapted for the screen and released in August, 1964. The film, which was directed by Robert Stevenson and starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, won five Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Andrews. However, the subsequent adventures of Mary Poppins remained only on the pages of P.L. Travers’ seven additional books, which she published between 1935 and 1988.

lol, gizmodo said now we'll have to wait through five more sequels until we get the Mary Poppins v Amelia Bedelia crossover.

Also, they stole my title...they hadn't even given it a name when I created this thread. :cmad:

It should be an American putting on a horrible Cockney accent, just for authenticity's sake. :o

Shia Labeouf with a mouth full of marbles.

It would be hilarious if they got Danny Dyer. Dyer calling Poppins treacle and Michael a mug.

Mark Kermode would probably have a heart attack if that happened.

BTW, it's weird that Lin isn't writing a song for the movie.

I have tickets for December, but I'm so psyched to see Hamilton again (I saw it last summer) that it's no big deal. The show really is THAT good.

And it's not official, but it's been pretty much assumed that he's leaving Hamilton in July (although there are rumors he was going to open with the show in Chicago). People still camped out for cancellation tickets when he was on vacation a few months ago, so I think they'll be fine.

Such awesome news, though!

I've seen the original movie more times that I've seen my face in the mirror. As a kid, watching it during the holidays was almost like an event for me and my family. The memories.
Plus, Emily Blunt is in it and she's playing Poppins. I never had any chance.

For some reason I'm currently envisioning a Mary Poppins film ala The Dark Knight Returns.

Yaaaaay wonderful news. So Michael and Jane will be all grown up? I hope so. I hope Jane became a suffragette like her mum and Michael went super camp and hangs around the early version of the west end
