Do you eat everything on your plate? If so, then why? If not, then why not?

Depends on what we're eating. Typically, something will be left over.

my grandpa used to always say "take what you want, but eat what you take" so that's stuck with me since i was little.

I always clean my plate. I even used to lick it when I was little, but my parents told me to not do that, so I had to abandon that habit. :p
I don't do it for any particular rule my parents gave me. I'm just a hungry man and I need my food. I also hate to see food go to waste.

I only put enough on my plate that I will eat. Never over indulge.

It depends on the size of the plate. If I can choose that size, yes, I eat everything. However, when I go out and can't choose the portion size, I refuse to clean my plate just for the sake of making certain that I eat everything. "Clean your plate" should not mean "over-eat and get fat."

Occasionally when I'm at a restaurant I will have food left over. But when I'm at home I can usually finish my meals.

My mom actually taught me to always leave a little food left over at a restaurant. I'm not sure why, but I never clean my plate when I eat out now.

I totally clean my plate at home, though.

I try to think of the starving people in Africa when I eat so i dont take anything for granted.

At home, almost always, because I only take as much as I think I can eat.

At a restaurant, not always, some restaurants serve portions that are far to large or put garnishes on it that I don't like. (Onions and peppers get picked out and left at the corner of my plate).

Yes.

And if people aren't paying enough attention I'll clean anyone else's plate as well.

I have a large appetite and very little shame.

Is this proper restaurant etiquette or something? Gets it, I don't.

Most of the time, I clean my plate. If I'm at a restaurant, I usually don't eat the random garnish and extra veggies they put on my plate but I will eat everything that is part of the whole meal (meat, sides, etc.)

I'm with ya on that one. Been so guilted by parental figures about the starving kids in Africa and how we're poor but should appreciate what we're given and stuff so much that I still feel like trash if I throw food out. I've been friggin' conditioned at this point. The worst is when my mom or other relatives are over and make the food because then it's like I never have enough on my plate as far as they're concerned and my "could've been" pleasant dinner becomes the 9th circle of Hell.

yes, and then some....
In fact I usually clear 2 or 3 plates lol

why....? I like food

I depends on what's one my plate. If there's mashed potatoes or mac and cheese on my plate, I lick it clean.

I agree with everything you say.

And when one is finished, rinse the plate and place it in the dishwasher.

I say this in general, but - Why not just save the food in the fridge for later, though? I hate the "starving kids in Africa" line, because I think that many people use it as an excuse for over-eating. Yes, we should appreciate how much we have, but if you are full, you should NOT force yourself to eat. The starving people in other countries will not benefit from someone else's obesity.
