Clean your plate

Yeah, it's obviously guessing on my part but sushi is one of those food items that for a lot of people(once again, guessing)it's the added stuff that gives the flavor that makes people say they like it or it "tastes good". There are a few others that are similar but I can't think of them right now.

When it comes to Chinese food and especially seafood, i'm incredibly picky. My friend finally got me to try eel(unagi right?) and damn was it good.

How is octopus?
That same friend I just mentioned said when he gets it they're tiny octopi and you eat them whole. I watched him stick the whole thing in his mouth like a snack and chow down. One of those items that kind of gives me the shivers, just like when I first saw the movie Oldboy and he starts eating that larger Octopi and it's tentacles are moving against his face.

Unagi and Tako (Octopus) are my favorites. Unagi Don is one of my favorite dishes on Earth. Octopus is good because it tastes fresh and clean and still manages to be very savory. I've had baby squid in the fashion that you're talking about but never octopus like that. I've always just had it sliced and served sushi or sashimi style.

I think the thing that Oldboy ate was a squid, but that movie kicked ass. And eating food that is alive is one of the most empowering things I've ever done.

Hahaha! That's because (in Worthington's voice)You're a man!

Take sushi for example, there is so much sauce and crap people eat with their sushi that it's incredibly laughable. I would love to see the majority of people out there who claim how great and delicious sushi is eat it without any of those extras. Just plain raw fish and nothing else. A few people i'm sure would still enjoy it but i'm willing to bet the majority of them would say no.

I don't put any of the spicey sauce on my sushi. I do put a little soya sauce on the rice that comes with the sushi, because the rice has no taste.

So you basically like it plain right?

My earliest memory of this type was refusing to eat green beans and peas. Probably around 3 or 4. My parents eventually just gave up. As for "cleaning your plate", if we had any extra food, my parents would just say give it to the dog. We had fat dogs.

i don't get why people eat things that have evolved massively unpleasant tastes that cause bad reaction in people like onions and chillies.

By chillies, do you mean peppers? If so, must people use onions and peppers as flavor enhancers. Yet, some people do eat them raw/whole, so to each their own.

I tend to think Americans that say how great sushi is are just being pretentious. Same with people who insist on eating with chop sticks.

why thank you. i'd somehow managed to lead my whole life not knowing how most people eat onions or chilli peppers.

I had an old fashioned upbringing. I was forced to eat things I didnt like. I think back to it now and think that if I only ate what I wanted to or liked it would be cake and ice cream all the time.

You're welcome. It's an easy mistake. I'm happy to help.

I think I was about 8 when I rebelled....liver and onions night.. I say thee nay

I usually cleaned my plate without needed to be told, but even if I didn't it wouldn't have mattered, since usually the threat was you wouldn't get desert and I've never been a big fan of desert.

As for certain types of food I do and don't like, my girlfriend always teases me about fruits and vegatables because my tastes haven't evolved for them, so I still only eat "kids fruits and vegatables".

Although my dad is pretty amazed at how adventurous I am eating these days, I'll try most things my parents never really even tried to get me to like. I'll tell him about some new restaurant I went to and he'll always say he never knew I liked that and I'll say, well we never tried it when I was growing up. One example of that was sushi, which I do use a good bit of soy sauce on, mainly because I really like soy sauce.

My mother would make me sit there until I ate whatever healthy thing it was I didn't want. Although, I was strange for a kid and loved things such as artichokes, asparagus, and mushrooms. What I didn't want to eat was always random, such as carrots or sausage. I still hate both of those things.

I do not believe that anyone should be forced to clean their plate. In fact, people who don't clean their plate stay slimmer :o

I think the "clean your plate" ideology started going out of favor with the Baby Boomers generation. I don't remember kids of the 80s being told that. I certainly don't force my kids to eat when they are full. That seems like a really bad idea.

I think parents who force their kids to eat something that their stomach doesn't take to, or if they're full already, are cruel & shouldn't be parents.

Even the most difficult of parents will stop feeding their kids certain foods if it makes them sick. But some kids are just difficult. I have a friend who refuses to eat any vegetable that isn't a french fry (or chips, or whatever you call them in your part of the world), and his diet mainly consists of hamburgers and different varieties of fried pork. His parents didn't force him to eat anything he didn't like when he was a kid, and I will be genuinely surprised if this friend of mine lives to see 40 because of his horrible eating habits.

You are right. As a parent, a balance must be struck. I don't want to make meals an unpleasant experience but kids have to have proper nutrition. Offering options is a good idea but ensuring a balanced diet is a must.

I don't think many people go that far. I bet that parents wouldn't just make the kids scarf things down until they drown in their own food. Most of the time it's for veggies anyway, so it's not hurting the kid too much to eat them.
