It's a toss-up between The Godfather and Goodfellas. I think you can make the case either is better, because they're both masterpieces. Goodfellas is a lot more fun, but that doesn't necessarily make it better, while Godfather feels like this incredible journey if you're in the mood to get lost in a story.

Then The Godfather Part II (it is smarter and more confidently made than the first Godfather, but it's just a lot more depressing).

I never really cared for The Sopranos or, obviously, The Godfather: Part III. You should throw Scarface into this too though.

A ranking of modern(ish) gangster movies:

1. The Godfather/Goodfellas
3. The Godfather: Part II
4. The Untouchables
5. The Departed
6. Scarface
7. Gangs of New York
8. Casino

I love the only two Godfather films that were ever made, but my vote went to Goodfellas. Coppala's romantic vision of a mob family's upper echelon was great, but I prefer Scorsese's warts and all take on the street level shnooks.

Goodfellas is my favourite gangster movie.

The first two Godfathers are among the best movies of all time. But personally I've never much cared for Goodfellas or The Sopranos (only watched the first season), no matter how well done they might be technically. I can't get emotionally involved when there's no one in the story I like or can root for.

I've seen the Godfather once or twice but I think of it as a chore to watch. Goodfellas is only thirty minutes shorter but so fast paced it never feels like it. Its also a near perfect movie (there is one choice in the middle I don't like).

With The Sopranos, if I ignored any episode or plot line I didn't care for, I would still have 50+ hours of amazing television. There are single episodes like Members Only, College, and Pine Barrens that work as mini movies just as well as part of a season. I also can't say enough nice things about James Gandolini as Tony Sopranos. It's an easy choice.

1. Goodfellas
2. The Sopranos
3. The Godfather Part II
4. The Godfather

I like Boardwalk Empire and Carlito's Way better than any of them, though.

A Bronx Tale should be in the discussion as well.

The Godfather & Godfather II are the 'daddies' of this genre.

Plus Boardwalk Empire, as far as TV goes is simply glorious televisual presentation of this genre.

Casino
Godfather 1&2
Sopranos
The Departed
Goodfellas

They're all great.
