Yes,I am from Shanghai.In Asia Market,things are very different in different areas.In mainland China it is imported as Robotech.So in those who were born between between 1977-1989, Robotech is their common memory。But in the late 1990s,Chinese government banned foreign animations(especially those from America and Japan).Youngsters have to watch foreign animations through pirate way.In China Japanese anime is much more popular than America anime,so among younger generation,Macross is more famous than Robotech.
In asia free countries,such as HK,Taiwan,Korea,Philippine,Japanese pop culture also have the strongest impact,they even import Macross earlier than
America.So Macross is more famous in these countries.But they also know Robotech,because they imported Robotech as well.And Most people in these countries know the relationship between Robotech and Macross

It will never stop until Chinese government downfall

It's ordinary in China.Chinese government protected local animation industry.
But Chinese animation makers are just lazy and stupid.Because government policy make them earning money very easily.They don't do orginal,just copy
classic foreign animations(especially those from Japan ,USA,Europe).Change their
names（but still much worse in quality than original edition)

Well I know they recently legalized foreign video game consoles, and they're allowing more foreign shows on TV, so maybe we'll see China continue to open up in other areas.

It reminds me of how Japan used to be closed from the rest of the world.

Still, China has a lot of potential. More than Japan even.

But they also think Lin Minmay should be a Japanese，because both
Robotech and Macross,her name and description doesn't change,she is a Japanese with half Japanese descent and half Chinese .And Asia fans love her songs in Japanese very much(Macross).
So if hollywood want to make a movie. They should choose a Japanese actress to act as Lin Minmay,and add songs in Macross(especially,do you remember love?) But other rolers，I think it's Ok to be acted by western actors.

They don't allow more foreign shows on TV,They just allow some foreign shows leagal on internet site(because if they don't do that,it still exist in priate way,and some shows Chinese government can't control).In fact the big bang theory,and the good wife just disappeared from Chinese video websites recently.
legalized foreign video game consoles,because almost all Chinese players are used to playing internet games(still closed to foreign companies).They don't have video game consoles.It's just a very small market.

I think Japan's culture market is very open after world war 2.They never ban
America movie,restrict American company's disturbition in Japan.They just have very strong cultural industries.
If Chinese government don't exist.It will become the largest movie ,TV shows,animations,video games,novel market in the world for sure.
because China has more population than America,Europe,and Japan.Hollywood may make movies to meet Chinese audiences' taste

I have some communications with some fans of this animations from mainland China(also some from other Asia countries).I found they are just eager for a movie about this animation.They also can receive some westernizations in
this movie because Hollywood had done this for a long time.They have got used to it.

I think Macross itself may not have much specific Japanese features,It's a
humanity story（Claudia is an African American in Macross).And Asian audiencesare getting used to a white male protagonist has an Asian love interest(Hollywood has made a lot of films of this kind from James Bond film to The Wolverine)

Interesting analogy with Phantom. It gives me an idea of what a teaser trailer would look like:

Begin with the wide establishing shot of a performance stage. Like something modern, like from the Idol show. The theatre is dead quiet, and a long female figure walks into the spotlight to a lone microphone on a stand.

We close up on the female, who is clearly Asian, and she approaches the microphone and opens her lips. She begins singing an a capella (voice only) soft pop ballad, maybe in English but not necessarily. We pan out to the audience, full of general people held in rapt, silent attention. We notice some of them are wearing unusual clothes, as if from the future.

Cut to what appears to be a crowded outdoor public space, like Times Square. People are standing, listening and watching the singer, who will continue to sing throughout the trailer, via large public TV screens. More futuristic people, but we also notice a lot of men and women in what appear to be military uniforms. Zoom out further, and we see the public square flanked by 3-4 giant humanoid robots (what???). We pan to the sky, and see the blackness of space beneath what appears to be a clear dome.

Zoom out further (the singer is still singing) and we find we are looking at a clear dome aboard what appears to be a giant battleship in space. Suddenly, what appears to be a fighter jet flies across the screen, but transforms into one of the humanoid robots, pauses for a second, then flies at the camera.

I think Robotech could potentially be a stronger franchise for the medium of film than either of those science-fiction heavyweights. The Star Wars prequels were generally bad, and the entire Star Trek film franchise from the beginning has been a hit-and-miss operation.

The best part about Robotech is that so much of it is rooted in human-level interactions and familiarity with our current world, which is why I believe a general audience (i.e. women) could enjoy this. Science fiction rooted in too much abstraction ("we have to collect enough power crystals to build a proton cannon to defeat the Zorgon Empire!") really turns off the general audience. But a deep struggle for love and survival, which is what "Robocross" is at its essence, is universal.

The time for a Robotech film has passed IMO. To be done right anyway, you'd need at least 6 films. It could have easily been this generation's Star Wars, but no, it won't do well now, especially with Maguire behind it.

With Godzilla you had a disaster movie with an iconic monster.

You don't have those with Robotech so you're looking at a Pacific Rim sized flop.

It is a bunch of fighter pilots, and their various romantic entanglements with compelling female characters, against a backdrop of total war on a global (or interplanetary) scale. There is so much in this franchise to appeal to different audiences.

Yes,today's large space movie such as Star Wars prequels(especially EP1),and
JJ.abrams' Star trek are too child-oriented,Studios seem to use these strategy
to cater to teenage's taste,but they may forget we have too many child-oriented movies today(Disney's Ironman ,Avengers),what gives a teenage the deepest impression is always an adult-oriented movie.This is also why Robotech get its success.It maybe the earliest adult-oriented animations on American TV

I really want this to happen. I have been a huge Robotech fan since I was a kid. My concern is that they have the GIJoe - The Rise of Cobra guy on this, which was a major dud. Here's hoping he doesn't f this up!!!
