It had no real walls or a door. Lex got in no problem. That always bothered me. At least in the old comics he had a huge key only he could lift. :cwink:

iuf your refering to Supes Returns then why? the only people in the world who knew about it was Lois and Lex.. and Lex was in jail when he left..

^ Lex could of easily told someone else inside or outside of Prison. Superman is not very smart is he.

why whould lex give something so valuble away..he is to smart to trust his own kind :P

maybe the fact that it's out in the middle of nowhere and has freezing cold blizzards is security enough

yup smallville used a blizzard as security too

This is sort of addressed in the deleted scenes of Donner's SII:

1) The Fortress DOES have a force-field of sorts, but it doesn't (or won't) harm mere mortals, only other super-people who probably would pose a more formidable threat to it (plus considering how far away from the rest of the world Clark went with that crystal, and the extremes of the arctic climate surrounding it, the Fortress was probably built under the prospect that trespassing by mere humans wasn't really anticipated - I suppose you could argue from the scenes with Lois and Miss Teschmacher that it was designed to accommodate humans, but then that could also be the standard room temperature on Krypton too, more so with those reflective suits :oldrazz: ). Even though the finished film (both versions) has Zod & Co. carrying Lex and Lois on their backs into the Fortress, we don't actually know how long Lex had been examining the crystals or how much information he gathered, so it's conceivable he may have found out about the force-field and tipped off Zod beforehand (so as to stave off getting done away with) and the presence of Lex and Lois would have rendered the force-field ineffective. Or something.

2) As far as who else knows...in one deleted scene at the end which has actually been featured in some early broadcast versions, an Arctic Patrol is seen carting Zod, Ursa, and Non away from the Fortress, so it's not unreasonable to assume that they did indeed survive and are at least somewhere under lock and key with no superpowers, and thus they would know about the existence of the Fortress as well.

exactly. I've always considered the FOS geographical location and harsh environmental surroundings enough of a deterrent to would be passersby.

You bring up a good point.
The operative word being "Fortress"
A deterrent to intruders.
a formidable defense.
Security is sorely lacking in this fortess.
Superman has many items in his Fortress of Solitude
some are of a sentimental nature others are priceless like the minature city of Kandor.
The giant key always left a deep impression on me I.d like to see the key in a film one day.
