I saw this tonight. Very impressive turn by Cheadle in an entertaining film, though it's hardly following the formula of say a WALK THE LINE or RAY. I think Don truly BECOMES Miles Davis despite anything anyone else might say of the film. On that, I think there's probably going to be a consensus. There is no coverage of childhood traumas or coming back from addictions in this film. There's just the strange mass of passions and contradictions that make up the soul of many artistic geniuses. Again, it's surprisingly a really entertaining movie, not least of which is because the film isn't precisely asking the viewer to make a moral judgement either way on Miles as a person. Now I have never seen the actress Emayatzy Corinealdi before, but my lord what a stunning beauty. This woman GLOWS on screen with a heat that makes you understand the Miles character's instant attraction. She has a strong presence on screen even if the film itself doesn't give her a huge spotlight as a character per se. She makes an impact when she is on screen.
Cheadle directed as well and it's a strange approach but for me that was part of the entertainment. It was different using various techniques to really make it all play out like a fever dream of sorts in many ways. It certainly made me want to see what Cheadle has in store for the future in terms of directing gigs.
