Tracing or grids are normally involved for realism. Really shouldn't be the taboo that it is. I've used both methods, but haven't done it for digital work, which is strange because it seems it would be easier

I’ve been accused of this before (with varying degrees of vehemence)...obviously I can’t prove it, but I’ve never traced or gridded. Everything I do is done freehand.

I know there shouldn’t be a taboo for tracing/grids, it’s just another method and might speed things up. It’s just my personal preference not to as I feel like it would take half the fun out of drawing for me, to have to match my strokes perfectly into a box or underlying image.

I don't think there's a "might" about it, it definitely speeds things up, lol. I've only recently tried those methods out within the past year but i saw a huge leap in speed. Didn't care for the grid though, because getting rid of the grid lines was problematic for me. And regarding tracing, I only did it for placement on larger sized pieces, probably not even an entire minute of using the projector, just tick-marks. I even traced the non-realistic Daredevil piece, technically, by projecting my little thumbnail sketch so I made sure I got everything I wanted right on the board, at the exact angle I wanted. Huge time saver for me.

You do great work. I only chimed in because I felt the need to defend tracing/gridding, I automatically assumed it was being looked down upon :P The only real bad version of tracing is when you do it off of someone else's art then pass it off as your own.

Yeah I understood what you were saying. There’s nothing inherently wrong with tracing/gridding. I just got a little defensive because in the past one or two people have aggressively and rudely insisted that I traced even when I said otherwise.

I think some of the stigma attached to tracing/gridding has to do with copying others’ art, like you said, and also maybe with beginning artists who rely too much on these methods (I’ve also been on art websites that banned tracing??), but it’s obvious from your art that you’re way capable of working without them. It’s just to save time. Amazing Daredevil piece, by the way.
