TDK more than any Batman film before is filled with characters pretending to be something they are not. Here are some obvious ones:

Bruce dressing up as Batman to hide his identity and promote the symbol of the bat.

Bruce pretending to be a shallow womanizing, drunk to avoid people connecting him with Batman

The Joker is constantly in costume:

Dresses up as a clown on top of his clown make-up in the ultimate kind of (non?) - irony!

Pretends to be a corpse to infiltrate the lair of one of the mob bosses.

Dresses in a nurse's outfit to visit Harvey.

Hides behind a policeman in the elevator to crash Wayne's party.

There are many others, such as the fake batmen who dress up like Batman each night and, of course, Harvey "Two-Face".

Can anyone else add to this list? Literal or symbolic examples?

Gordon faking his death then dressing as a SWAT member

Scarecrow with his mask on

The fake Batmen

The Joker had the prisoners masked as the kidnapprers and vie versa.

Ramirez and Wuertz were actually dirty cops pretending to be good.

Hyams Amusement Laughter Truck was actually a (s)Laughter truck.

i thought this was a thread on the copycats, lol! regaurding that, they had some great looking, accurate cowls,(especially brian douglas) even though supposedly (speaking movie- wise) nobody has ever seen batman up close(or stayed conscience long enough to notice his cowl) except gordan.

Alfred. Pretending he didn't wanna rub that russian ballarina in lotion.

Lau was masquerading as an honest businessman.

That actually bothered me a bit. How did they get the exact same cowl as Bats? It would have made more sense if they were wearing home made cowls.

Wow. There are heaps! Here are some others:

Bank heist villains wearing clown masks (and all the others too).

Disguising a bomb as a big fat guy!

Disguising the bomb's charger in a present.

The prison inmate at the end who turns out to be not a villain but a hero

And since we're talking subtexts, what's up with all the broken windows and glass in the film, from the opening scene to the interrogation room, the batpod crashing through glasses, Batman breaking the glass with Lau's men etc ?... Is it because it's pretty to watch and a staple of action movies or does it maybe have a deeper psychological meaning ?

I don't know. Good point though. Same with all the dog references throughout the film:

"I'm just a dog chasing cars..."
"The Joker's a mad dog..."
"..and we'll see how loyal a hungry dog really is"

Then there is the Joker placing his head out the window like a dog.

The dogs that attack Batman twice...

Good point too:up:. I love subtexts in movies and TDK certainly delivers on that front as well.
I love the shot of the Joker and the 3 rotweillers in the tower, iconic and beautiful.

Some more:

Joker dresses the Batman copy-cat in clown make-up.

Harvey and Dent are also covered in clown make-up and are used to make everyone think it is the actual Harvey Dent

Joker hides the poison in Loeb's whisky

Batman finds Dent in place of Rachel

Batman pretending to be inside the tumbler at the start of the film

Batman pretending to be Robocop bending the gun :oldrazz:
