Dream Directors for the DCEU

Alfonso Cuaron for Green Lantern
George Miller for Justice League
Brad Bird for Superman
Ben Affleck for Batman
Kathryn Bigelow for Wonder Woman
Antoine Fuqua for Cyborg
Keep James Wan for Aquaman
Guy Ritchie for Suicide Squad
Matthew Vaughn for Outsiders
Gillermo Del Toro for Justice League Dark
Zack Snyder for SHAZAM
Joss Whedon for Teen Titans

I agree that Ayer is talented but I just don't think his style suits CBMs of this variety. I think he'd be better at adapting a Mark Millar comic or something else really gritty. DC films, even ones about villains like Suicide Squad, should be more colorful and fun.

Ayer would be PERFECT for something like 100 Bullets. He could really cut loose with that property.

Because he can tell a story using visuals and a lean structure. Not many directors create action scenes like he does. And he can quickly define characters without the need of exposition or clunky dialogue. Plus he has a brilliant eye for details that other directors deem after thoughts. His attention to detail helps create a world beyond what we see in the film itself, if you know what I mean. There are themes and layers, yet they aren't forced down our throats like some well regarded directors tend to do.

Furiosa for example. We are never told her history. We aren't told her motivations or how she feels. We are SHOWN through her actions. Same as Max. He barely speaks yet we know exactly what he is about. All the wives have well defined personalities despite their small roles. Nux the War Boy has a fantastic and believable growth throughout the film.

Then you gotta consider what an absolute nightmare it was to make Fury Road. It was in development hell for years. It was a miracle it turned out so good.

Fury Road is truly a modern masterpiece.

Fury Road caught everyone by surprise, I think. Like Endless said, he's a good visual storyteller. Very imaginative.

That said, I think it's a classic case of fans jumping on whoever is hot at the moment. Miller made a big, fun and intelligent blockbuster so, naturally, his name comes up whenever the next big superhero epic (today's N.1 type of property) is discussed.

Why I'd Heorge Miller considered so good?

For me, Fury Road was a sort of vindication of the guy who was considered not good enough to do Justice League: Mortal. Most of the critique was "the cast is too young, JL 90210" and "The Happy Feet guy!? wtaf" but he was the guy who really could have Peter Jacksoned the DCU, and the inability to take risks like that is why the DCEU is stuck on second fiddle right now. If it wasn't too late to harness his incredible worldbuilding skills to build the DCU, he'd be the best choice by far.

I fear Ayer doing Mark Millar adaptations because it would be too faithful. Mark Millar adaptations need a moderating force to make them good. Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn for instance.

Jonathan Levine - The Flash
Brad Bird - Shazam
Neill BlomKamp or José Padilha - Cyborg
Duncan Jones or Alex Proyas - Green Lantern Corps
Martin McDonagh or Joe Carnahan - Suicide Squad Sequel
Dean DeBlois or Peter Ramsey - Teen Titans

That is the case for me only because this is my introduction to the Mad Max series.
In all his years directing, it's truly unfortunate he didn't get the chance to do more.
