Dune: Will another Sci-fi ever come close?

You want to talk about epic movies. Movies with complex characters, a deep plot and sub plots. I really enjoyed this movie.
What do you think folks?

Hate.

But .... It came out when I was fairly young and I simply think it went right over my head.

Must sit down and watch it again some time.

It was okay, I much prefer the other two Lynch films I've seen, Eraserhead and Elephant Man. My friend had read the book so he'd explain all the inconsistencies with the book as well as expand on this so it made it a tad more enjoyable. However the movie is rather bland, the characters are cheezy and two dimentional, and the entire effort reeks of the 80s in a bad way, hell it has FRICKIN STING in it! I don't know I plan on reading the book which I hear is awesome.

the book is a good time. I think looking back on the movie it really has its merit. Yers the 80's are there just under the skin, but as far as sci-fi movies it really stands up. much better than pitch black, space truckers, serenity, and the new "star wars" IMO

Space Truckers... Gawd... I haven't seen that since it was on TV so long ago... As for Pitch Black, Serenity, and New star wars... There's a difference, we live in an age where Sci-Fi has become synonomous with "ACTION VECHILE" When was the last time a SCi-Fi Drama came on the scene, Solaris? And that tanked horribly... As for Dune it was no better than Pitch Black and Star Wars in some sense, I'd take new star wars over Dune the movie any day.

I watched 2001: Space Odessey today, this will have been my second time seeing it... That is a damn good sci-fi movie...

Loved it, still do it's one of my favorites, partially because Im a huge fan of the books. Lynch, while adding some really bad stuff, to me he really capture the look and feel of the books that that sci-fi mini series didnt.

A remake, well not exactly a remake but another version may be happening.

I loved this Dune, but it is not one of my favorite Sci-Fi movies. It is a really good sci-fi movie, but I can think of many other sci-fi movies I thought were better.

i just think back to when this movie waqs made. this was a serious epic film. the starwars fans were pumping a lot of money into the genre, so I think that is what allowed for this movie to be made. i wish someone would put a sci fi together today with as much effort.

It was a David Lynch movie...all his movies are weird.

I liked Dune, but it has pacing problems lacks explanation in certain scenes, and as someone who has never read the book, these needed explaining. I know not all of this was Lynch's fault (since the producers never let him cut the movie to the near 3hrs he wanted), but those problems are there.

Like I said, there have been many better sci-fi movies.

Lynch's "Dune".......good movie with problems. With an adaptation of such a large book....I understand that certain things have to be left out for running time....so why did he add in things that were not in the book in their place?

I like the Sci Fi channel miniseries more....due to it's covering more of the novel.

Dune is one of my favorite movies by far. It was one of those movies that got very much interested in different spiritual concepts/perspectives and philosophy. I have the expanded edition and watch it from time to time. Dune, Superman, The Matrix, Batman Begins, Star Wars Trilogies, and The Street Fighter series are selections I can watch over & over and never really get tired of.

After learning of the additional books when I was younger, I had hope they would make a trilogy (i.e. Star Wars). I caught the updated versions but was sort of disappointed.

When I'm joking around with my friends (particularly females) in an argument, I immitate the scene where Paul says "SILENCE!" t:

The Sci-Fi mini series is more accurate story-wise to the novel. Yet Lynch's movie feels more accurate look and tone wise atleast to me. I personally hated the set and costume design of the mini-series, especially those ridiculous head dresses they put all the women in and the still suits. Lynch added the "weirding module" to up the sci-fi space aspect but it backfired on him and was rather pointless. Both have good and bad about em but personally I prefer Lynch's. The biggest let down to me with the mini-series was the second one, where they actually combined two books Children of Dune and Dune Messiah. In the novels they are literally children of I believe 8 or 9, in the series they are late teens early twenties. It completely took all the awe of these small children with "other" memory away.
Even though I wasnt particularly crazy about the mini series I would love for them to do God Emperor of Dune.

I read the book,and thought it was a good book. I watched the original dune long time ago before reading the book. I just watched a remake of dune(forgot who was in it),and I really didn't care for it. I couldn't find the version with sting in it,so I settled for another version. This one had lot of holes in plot and characters....
Far as another sci/fi film coming close,ya there are movies that come close. Its just depends on ur opinion of what makes a sci/fi movie a good one.
Think this subject would make a great stand alone thread: What are the top 10 sci-fi moives of all time.. Guess I can make a thread, while im doing nothing..
