Sci-Fi Dune

A Best Picture nomination for this is looking very likely. Besides it being helmed by Denis Villeneuve, this is exactly the kind of big budget film they like.

Finally caught this today in Imax. I refused to watch it on HBO Max before I got the chance to watch this the way Villaneuve wanted me to. So, look, I'm a BIG Villaneuve fan, I've loved Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival and thought Bladerunner 2049 was a masterpiece when I saw that in theaters in 29017 (granted, I liked it SLIGHTLY less upon rewatch at home, I felt the slow pacing a lot more).

Dune is....complicated. It was a visceral cinematic experience for sure; this movie is without a doubt INCREDIBLY well made, an audiovisual masterpiece. The sound and music helped keep my attention throughout the runtime but I can't lie guys, I struggled with this movie. And I wanna be very careful so as not to sound as if I'm s***ing on this movie but I felt that the plot momentum was incredibly laborious and halfway through I was really getting restless and wondering where all this was going. Bladerunner 2049 was slow but it had a hook and a plot it was working towards, it was essentially a film noir mystery. Halfway through Dune my mind was wandering and struggled to stay focused. And then just as I would start to daydream, I would be woken up by sweeping vista shots and Zimmer's INCREDIBLE score. The characters also just seemed very sterile and the only one having any fun was Jason Mamoa. So, as a result it was hard to care about them.

But I think, my friends, what it really boils down to is not so much an issue with the movie...but the source material itself. I think. I think maybe Dune as a concept, as a story just doesn't gel with me personally, it's too out there for me and I like sci-fi. I watched Lynch's version a couple of weeks ago and I struggled with that one too and I'm wondering if its just the material. It just may not be as palatable as some of the Sci fi stuff that we're used to these days and that's cool. I'm very very happy this movie exists and I WILL watch part 2 and rewatch this eventually but....I don't know what to make of it.

My thoughts.

Surprised to see that the first (out of three planned) Funcom related Dune games is not the Survival Game they've been talking about so much, but an RTS game. Gives me confidence in what they're doing with the license tbh.

Looks low-budget, but if gameplay and atmosphere are good, it will do.

Though Harkonnen mentat from Dune 2000 can't be replaced:

"Go. Take some men and mine everything. And execute everyone who tries to stop you... And watch the worms. You've no use to us dead."

It's not low budget, it's just 22 years old :)

What's the chances of this getting a nomination for best adapted screenplay?

Prepare for this to get 13-15 nominations. Probably, winning 3-5 for sure. Huge possibility it takes up to 8 trophies home.

13-15 nominations is a tall order. I very much doubt this is getting any acting nominations but everything else is on the table. It just got nominated for Best Motion Picture - Drama at the Golden Globes so it's more than likely getting a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars, with Best Director and Adapted Screenplay going along with it. It'll also probably sweep the sound and VFX categories.

Maybe it'll pull off a Fury Road sweep at the Oscars.

#DUNE has been nominated for 10 #CriticsChoice Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Hair And Makeup, Best Visual Effects, and Best Score.

Ok I wasn’t certain they would pull this off but this was fully epic.

my only suggestion for improvement is when the sand worms turn up they should yell “sand worms” like Pokémon

That's not happening. Here are the categories.
Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Production Design, Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound, Visual Effects, and Score is best case scenario. Best case is 11 nominations.

HBO Max would be wise to copy Disney's recent method of releasing some of their MCU films in IMAX format on Disney+. Dune was meant to fill up the whole screen.

HBO max doesn’t even have 4K/hdr versions of most of their movies yet.

That sucks.

I assume WB wants to milk that for when Part 2 comes out.

That comparison just makes me think of filming for 1.43:1 IMAX as a drawback. The IMAX shots look better in comparison because the framing was made for them but the things that they are showing are well suited to the cinematic scope of wide aspect ratios so I think there's a good chance that it could look at least as good or better with a wider framing. Furthermore most people don't have access to such IMAX theaters.

1.43:1 doesn't work great on TV either so I'm less keen on getting that for home viewing than I am with films in 1.9:1.

I think DPs say that you can shoot only for one aspect ratio. I regret not watching it in IMAX. All comparisons that I saw, IMAX definitely looks better. Still hoping for IMAX edition of Dune for home media.

Dune was superb in IMAX, really bummed about the aspect ratio on the home release hopefully they correct it down the line.
