Sci-Fi Dune

No whities as Stilgar please.

LOL, you are right in that regard (maybe he can play Kynes?). I do hope we get some diversity among the Houses this time, especially the Harkonnens being perhaps Eastern European too, to some extent. Also hoping we'll finally get to see their triangular arena with Feyd armed with his two blades against that gladiator. The mini-series came close but again, their budget couldn't support them making such a set I suppose.

And having just watched the Arrival bonus features, Denis Villeneuve explained how he's not a fan of green-screen, so there's definitely a good chance we'll see many good sets, obviously. :)

Oh yeah Denis Villeneuve can't stand green screen. He even said on Blade Runner where he absolutely had to use it, he did. Many directors would green screen the f**k out of Blade Runner.

God it would be nice to get a good adaptation of Dune. It will be difficult, but I'd like to see it.

He may have to face the same dilemma when to comes to filming Dune as well, but I'm sure he'll find a way around much of it. All it takes is a very good set designer to make it all look believable. :)

I hope he doesn't have it rain at the end of the movie. :barf:

So I walked into a Used Bookstore this afternoon and saw that Paul of Dune was available for a mere $2. While I hear that the Brian & Kevin books pale in comparison to Frank's epic works, $2 is a steal. I still want to read Dune Messiah and Children of Dune so I was hoping that used copies of those would be available but to no avail. Anyhoo, I gave in and decided to order brand new copies instead - and I don't really do Kindle either tbh. Call me old-fashioned, but I do prefer to have the physical copy in my hand. I tend to fall asleep reading off a screen lol.

And before picking up Paul, I've ended up starting to read Dune again after finishing it a few days ago. Again, I'm imagining voices for each character that funnily enough, I'm using Hayden Christiansen/Matt Lanter (TCW Anakin) as Paul. Yeah, why not? When he was younger of course! :p

Also, revising, now that I'm following the ages of when these characters were born. Might have to revise them again...

Gurney Halleck: Clive Owen
Thufir Hawat: Michael Gambon/Christopher Plummer
Duncan Idaho: Luke Evans/Pedro Pascal
Liet Kynes: Jake Gyllenhaal
Emperor Shaddam IV: Bryan Cranston
Count Fenring: Mark Strong
Baron Vladimir Harkonnen: Albert Finney
Glossu "Beast" Rabban: Ciaran Hinds
Duke Leto: Benicio Del Toro/Jim Caviezel
Stilgar: Shaun Toub/Alexander Siddig
Piter DeVries: Toby Jones
Lady Jessica: Emily Blunt/Evangeline Lilly

Also, the Dune timeline indicates that Thufir and Yueh are well over 100 years old. Guess they can still get away with it by casting actors over 70, yeah?

It's been awhile since I read the book, but aren't the Fremen implied to be darker-skinned there as well?

Yes, Middle Eastern in appearance I believe. I do fear that certain conservative groups are going to have a lot to say about this movie(s) regarding the Fremen. Fox News won't be much help either not to mention all the xenophobes out there.

Yeah, the religion seems to draw a lot from Islam.

Zoe really wants to be Sigourney Weaver's successor as the "Queen of Sci-fi" it would seem. I'm, actually ok with this.

I'm not particularly fond of actors overtly saying they want roles. Obviously it happens but why not get your agent or yourself to talk to the director/producers/studio on your behalf? Don't need to confirm your desperation.

I doubt that Zoe is "desperate." She's a big part of TWO franchises right now, and she has no real problem getting other work as well. Maybe she's just a fan of the book, or wants to work with the director.

I'm not going to criticize her for saying "yeah I'd like to be in this." Because, why is that a problem?

And yeah, I agree that if she did get a role, it doesn't necessarily have to be as one of the Fremen.

Just pick a female role? Why couldn't she be Jessica, Chani, Irulan, Margot Fenring, Harah, Reverand Mother Mohaim?

I wouldn't mind her as Harah actually... ;)

What changes to the story does it make if Jessica or Paul aren't white?

I think Jessica is one of the few cases where a character needs to be kept white because the Harkonnens are supposed to be terrible Aryan Trumpies.

God, I hadn't even thought of that. There's no way I can see The Bar(r)on as anyone else.

Zoe would make a great Sheeana if they get that far. Or even Murbella.
I don't see any character in the first novel I'd cast her as.

My darling Feyd...

Too old for Chani I'm afraid. Maybe she can be used in the sequels.

As far as diversity goes, I wouldn't be opposed to both Thufir and Yueh being minority-oriented. Thufir Hawat does sound like a Muslim name and Yueh closer to Asian?! That's how I'm looking at it if you ask me. :)
