Sci-Fi Dune

Brian Herbert on his Twitter revealed that there was to be some announcement made sometime this month, but according to a more recent tweet that announcement could now likely be pushed out to August. Apparently, Denis and Eric Roth are working closely on the screenplay so I can't help but feel more excited.

Currently reading Heretics of Dune, atm. How awesome would it be for specific details into how Duncan died on Arrakis be integrated into this film?! And if I remember correctly, other details of his death were also explained in God Emperor.

I'm pretty excited for this, hopefully they don't have to play it so secret like they did with BR. As it's an adaptation not exactly a new story that has spoiler potential. Hoping he gets Deakins involved cause at least then you know the movie will at the very least be stunning.

Hell yes. Deakins doing the cinematography in Dune would be amazing.

Brian Herbert has even been hinting that Roger Deakins could indeed be a lock-in. Let's hope so. Will Hans Zimmer take the reigns as Composer seeing that Jóhann Jóhannson is no longer with us?! Maybe give Michael Giacchino a go...

If Deakins and Zimmer on board, you don't even need a script and actors. Just some sock puppets making random noises, and it will still be epic.

UPDATE- Denis has said he'd have loved to shoot both films back-to-back but that would be far too expensive.

Actually, I don't mind this approach. That way if you definitely cast young actors and the sequel is released a year or two from each other, the kids will have aged a little which will certainly help. That is, if they set the film from the two years that Paul and Jessica have been living among the Fremen. I would still prefer the second film to be released the following year though. :)

It is but depends on how expensive the first movie will be. And with sci-fi you can bet a sequel would be more expensive.

On another Dune forum, somebody suggested Finn Wolfhard from Stranger Things as Paul. I can definitely see it. :)

I thought the idea of shooting back to back was to reduce costs.

It reduces costs if you're set on making two movies.

But Dune is an umproven property, so they wouldn't want to finance more than one movie.

OK, after coming back from seeing Deadpool 2 got me thinking about Brianna Hildebrand, whether she would be a good choice for Chani. Sure, she's 21 which she can still pass off for a teenager, however, I'm not sure of her range as an actress as I've only seen her playing Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Never realised she's actually quite pretty once you take her out of her Negasonic look.

She'd be perfect. Legitimately. Good suggestion.

The middle of the first book does have a timeskip. Just saying.

Well yeah, it's the perfect place to do it and would also allow for the actor portraying Paul to age a little. My fear is the first film doesn't hit BO numbers and then we are left with half a story.

That's also what I fear. I don't know how you make Dune appealing to a massive audience unless you make a ton of changes.

My general feeling is make it a massive TV series over movies. Basically make it the sci-fi Game of Thrones. But not my call.

Absolutely. I think the story would be better served being built up over time that a series would allow, not to mention giving characters much deeper arcs.
Since they are going forward with movies I wish they would film both at once, break it up in two and release them 6 months apart. Market the crap out of it and hope for the best.

Legendary also bought TV right's to DUNE as well. So its' in their thinking to do something TV based on the Dune universe.

That's the risk you always take (same with IT). But if they pull it off, imagine how epic that second part will be.

I'll always take a true visionary filmmaker's movie over a mini-series on TV. With Villeneuve, we could definitely be in for something truly special. And who doesn't want to see Arrakis on an IMAX screen as opposed to at home.

Brianna doesn't look like she has any acting skills, but she can sing. But I think a good direct can make her work if necessary.

Finn Wolfhard looks like a good choice looks and age wise. Can he pull off a leader? Open question.

Well the risk is on a much larger scale, It had like a 35 million dollar budget.

I'm overly thrilled at the prospect of the movie. With Villeneuve directing, hopefully Deakins cinematography and a cast you know is going to be dam good...the release can't get here soon enough.
It really boils down to how they are going to go about turning this into a franchise that the general public will be into.

I gotta say... I don't know if a two parter is the best idea for this. I just hope the first part feels like it could be one movie. I hope this doesn't become too much for Denis. It's ambition could be something that could make the movie suffer.

It's why he delayed THE SON with Jake Gyllenhaal and took a time out this year to prep for DUNE. He's had a movie out for the last 5 years. So need to regroup mentally, physically he said.
