Sci-Fi Dune

What about Villeneuve's work suggest a John Carter film? Have you seen his films? That isn't his style, at all.

Exactly. Chalamet is a bright young star and I cannot wait to see who else joins the cast

I don't want this to be a "Let's all pile on the dissenting opinion" kind of thing, but it's just such a bizarre point of view.

1. A 22-year-old actor who has already got quite a fan following, and the respect of his peers, isn't going to put butts in the seats?

2. A movie that, as of this moment, entirely consists of Oscar nominees both in front of and behind the camera = John Carter vibe?

Even though I agree with you, you could spice up your gif game, it's always the same sassy face on different people. I don't know how you can find the same exact expression on all these different people in gif form.

We still know very little and have no footage or even set photos to say what this'll be. I can guarantee it won't be anything like John Carter though.

It's Dune. the likelihood of this being a box office smash in the first place is slim.

The whole concept of a name actor to open a movie is a myth. Always has been.

Well, Villaneuve has yet to make a movie that sucks, so the chances of this film having a John Carter vibe are slim.

??

Tom Hanks didn’t sell Cast Away as predominantly the only actor in the movie?

If it was Joe Somebody, it would’ve done just as well?

It is, but it's also just a weird bone to pick with Chalamet, considering he's probably the closest thing to a name actor in his age group, aside from maybe, like... Tom Holland?

Someone on Twitter actually brought up an interesting point about this coming post-Game of Thrones and audiences potentially being more enticed by/accepting of their sci-fi and fantasy being mixed with palace intrigue and power struggles and so forth.

Doesn't mean I'm expecting it to crack a billion, but who knows...

By the way, I like John Carter. But this is very different material, from a very different director. Chalamet a very good young actor, and that is what the role calls for. He also has a legit following.

He does have a legit following.

I am excited about this casting, this director and what I am hearing so far.

Game of Thrones is a TV series and doesn't have to rely on box office dollars. We don't see content like Game of Thrones at the multiplex. Not saying it can't be done, but that kind of content works on TV. Does it work in a $200 million movie?

It's also not exactly a wacky R-rated superhero comedy like Deadpool 2 either.

So my question is this. Does that Game of Thrones style, that works so well on TV when TV can generally be bolder, more ambitious and experimental, can it work in a big budget franchise picture? I'm not so sure.

I think the whole point of TV nowadays is that is where you can get creative, ambitious and experimental without having to worry about "does this please the tween demographic?"

Scarlett Johansson was cast in Ghost in the Shell for her name value and the fact that she had a big solo hit in Lucy. Ghost in the Shell didn't open.

Of all young actors, I can't imagine better casting choice.

Worried about Jessica. I hope it's an actress that I like. :P

Cate Blanchett as Lady Jessica :D

This is the only choice. You know it is.

I'll be disappointed if it's Cate Blanchett. She plays royalties regularly and I'm tired of it. Bring someone new.

Jennifer Morrison :D

Amy Adams

Emily Blunt

If you don't want Blanchett, then I don't want Nicole Kidman :)

Earlier in this thread someone suggested Sylvia Hoeks and I think it's an interesting choice. I liked her in BR49, she's of right age and I like how she looks.

High chance the studio or even Villeneuve himself will want to cast someone more familiar in the role, like Blunt, Adams or whatever. But it's boring, imo.

Hmm...her as Lady Jessica, maybe. I did really like her performance in Blade Runner. And she is about the right age.

Clearly I touched a nerve.

Not trying to be pessimistic. And no, I don’t think it will visually look like John Carter. We haven’t seen any footage yet.

What I mean is I’m assuming the studio is aiming for a commercial, mass appeal saga. But like BR2049, I think they may be disappointed with the financial results. I agree the talent so far is admirable.

I was hoping that they'd go for not the hottest stars at the moment. Chalamet is a very predictable choice. It would be nice to see some new faces.

That point alone makes this movie vastly different from John Carter.
