Scarlett Johansson was cast in Ghost in the Shell for her name value and the fact that she had a big solo hit in Lucy. Ghost in the Shell didn't open.

Yeah, it's just superficial studio logic. Somewhere in film history movies with names opened successfully, and studio exec's got in their head that this was a factor. If you look at all the box office failures and successes with movies with names, the ratio is pretty even, if not more skewed towards failure. There's no conventional wisdom when it comes to a film being a sure success.

It is, but it's also just a weird bone to pick with Chalamet, considering he's probably the closest thing to a name actor in his age group, aside from Tom Holland?

Chalamet is talented and probably the most ideal. And they made a fine compromise with not casting a minor in the role yet cast someone at least boy-ish looking.

For this being the next John Carter. In terms of financial, it's definitely possible. In terms of quality? Who knows? Passion projects by auteurs like Villeneuve have disappointed in film history, but given we don't know I say given his incredible output I'd say this has more going for it. The two movie idea could be this movie's downfall if all goes wrong. But I can see why people could see this movie disappointing in both respects. The man did the impossible with topping a sci fi classic, so he's definitely proven himself in this department. He's more qualified to do this than probably any director right now.

I was hoping that they'd go for not the hottest stars at the moment. Chalamet is a very predictable choice. It would be nice to see some new faces.

He basically is a "new face".

He was in Call me By Your Name and Lady Bird. He has Beautiful Boy coming up which has a lot of buzz, plus the next Woody Allen movie and Greta Gerweig's Little Women. He's arguably the most popular male actor of his age right now.

I mean Chalamet is in his early 20s but he does look boyish. Paul starts at 15 years old in the books.

Some of the suggestions for Lady Jessica are way off. The actress will be someone Villeneuve had worked before OR another A-list. Actresses like Morrission, Acker or Atwell won't even be on the considered list.

Blunt would make sense, but the idea that he won't cast an A-list actor in a prominent role is kind of way off after 2049. After Gosling, the two major roles were not A-listers and Atwell has more then enough cred.

How about Ana De Armas? Sylvia Hoeks? Sarah Gadon? The idea that bigger actors, does not preclude him from casting lesser knowns.

Blade Runner's cast included a mix of "names" (Harrison Ford obviously, Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto), and mostly new faces at least to US audiences (Ana De Armas, Sylvia Hoeks).


I wouldn't be surprised if Dune's cast has a couple bigger names and a few unknowns or lesser-knowns.
