Sci-Fi Dune

Clickbait article writers always try to make it sound like some combo of actors or directors or singers or whoever have a beef with each other, whether they do or not.

Twin Peaks: The Return.... had it’s moments.

Got a light?
Loved that episode, loved the finale, loved a whole lot about the revival, but there’s a lot other stuff that’s just like... did we really need that much Dougie?

I was afan of the original Twin Peaks, but didn‘t get warm with the new season.
It felt right, at the 90‘s (though I‘ve seen it in 2006)

Unfortunately he's going to get hounded by that question for the rest of his life unless some interviewer does his research.

I was reminded of an interview he did regarding the time he was asked to direct "Return of The Jedi"

Once again he had "zero interest" lol

I think it will be different than the Lynch movie, no doubt about that.

Lynch movie took some liberties to make the story more accessible in 2 hours, weirding modules vs extreme combat training and "Captain America" super human skills, Navigators don't fold space, they "see" (with the help of Spice) the safer way in space from point A to B, the folding is done by the ship engine (Holtzman drive), in the book, the fact that The Guild is dependent on Spice isn't a known fact, the reveal comes later.
Too much details to write them all.

It's faithful to overall plot. But many smaller details were altered. Plus a lot of detail was lost, because it's just impossible to fit this story into a 2-hour movie and do it proper justice. I read that the movie was meant to be much longer and there is a fan edit that attempts to restore at least part of it.

I hope DV was able to conjure some striking imagery and it's in the trailers... Because I believe it's the only thing that can draw GA to this one. Not counting some extra audiences from Chalamet and Zendaya.

IMHO, Lynch's ending sort of ruins the canon of the books and Paul as a character. Frank Herbert was very gracious about Lynch's film, but he put it very simply:

Paul is playing a god. He's not a literal one.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Good thing that Villeneuve is doing it in two parts. Let's hope the first one does enough to warrant a sequel.

In Lynch's movie there's strong insinuation that Baron Harkonnen has a thing for men.

He straight up forces himself on a young fella and then in another scene his leery eyes seem very fond of a half naked Feyd. What will Villeneuve do?? :thf:

I wonder if it even needs to be in the film. When Villeneuve says that the baron is a bit of a caricature in the books, I have to agree. Some of the things depicted in the book seem to be only for a reason of contrasting Harkonnen and Atreides. Making the baron extra repulsing. So I'm thinking his predatory homosexuality will either get the knife, or will be transformed into something else. Maybe it will be part of depicting the excess or gluttony, without pushing it into sexual violence territory.

It could come off as homophobic to modern sensibilities if the big bad is a predatory homosexual.

Based on what I read in Vanity Fair, it sounds like they are going to tone down the Baron to some degree, but we'll see.

Which probably means that The Baron attraction for young boys will not be in the movie at all.
No big deal, it's not that essential.

To me the character wasn't homophobic. I always viewed the Baron as someone was as ugly on the inside as he was on the outside. Just a gluttonous, wrathful, lustful demon in human skin. Maybe you can call it a reflection of human greed or unchecked capitalism. But I hope they don't take away his copious sexual appetites and sanitize the character.

To me neither but making the main villain, which is already evil incarnate, an obese and a pedophile (well an ephebophile to be precise) could be too much for some people and lead to social media outrage.

This is my problem I have with the way people are consuming media now. Now it's wrong to see bad people doing bad things. Or if bad things happen to a certain group on film. People think the depiction of abhorrent actions onscreen is the same thing as approval. it isn't.

The miniseries did a good job of it. We see one of his sex slaves leaving his den. At another point, we see one of his dead sex slaves. I think you can make parts of it suggestive without having to spell it out for people.

Unfortunately, that is the trend in the current time.
We shall see how it goes.

I agree 100%. People are getting dumber and dumber in the way they approach media, and people need to stop thinking that a writer creating a serial killer might be a serial killer himself. But also, a story about a woman does not necessarily have to be written by a woman. A woman should also be allowed to write a story about men. A black male should be allowed to write a story which is not black-led or black-driven, and so forth.

Too many people who don't have any passion for and do not understand anything about storytelling and filmmaking judge media today. That's the problem.

They should get back to their real hobbies and shut the **** up.

Except I am fairly confident that Herbert made him like that because he views homosexuality as evil and or wrong.

I think that is simplistic, based on this passage:

God Emporer of Dune said:
"You'd rather she learned to love someone more gross and evil than any Baron Harkonnen ever dreamed of being," Idaho said.

Moneo worked his lips in and out, then: "The Lord Leto has told me about that evil old man of your time, Duncan. I don't think you understood your enemy."

"He was a fat, monstrous.. ."

"He was a seeker after sensations," Moneo said. "The fat was a side-effect, then perhaps something to experience for itself because it offended people and he enjoyed offending."

You may want to look for the passage about the lesbian Fish Speakers.
