Sci-Fi Dune

Maybe it will work differently. For example, it won't cover the whole body, just be some kind of force field of limited size, so it's placed on the hand for better control.

Not my doing, just finding but I would agree about the better control aspect.

The shield generator being worn at the wrist instead of belt isn't that of big of a deal (I would not like it but still) as long as it covers the whole body as it does in the book.
The Dune shield is not an invisible classic shield but more like an invisible armor (not totally invisible, you can see the shimmering of the energy field).

Edit : they went for real armor, I think the body shield will not as big of a deal as it is in the book. In the book, it's the basics of the current fighting techniques and hand to hand combat (unless you're a Bene Gesserit). Projectile weapons are near useless (unless you got no shield) and lasers vs shield can destroy both sides. All that is nerdy nitpick so it doesn't mean much when it comes to movie version.

I’m still waiting for that bastard to give me the Michael Keaton Batman he never promised me. :o

Kind of wish they had Superman I&II'd it, I doubt it could be left unmade, I imagine it's all been green lit and everyone signed into part II. Although I haven't been reading all the behind the scenes, so I can't stand that there is even a remote possibility part II, could possibly be left unfinished.

Where (what event) are people imagining the book being split; for the end of the first film / start of the second?

Also anyone put these two images together yet?
Seem to fit.
Looks like the Ornithopter, probably more length to the "tail" and by the placement of the "sockets" looks like it will likely have four (what I can imagine could be four Dragonfly-like) wings.

Thanks for finding those closeup photos Green.

The interior sets do look good.

These days nearly everything is molded or CGI-ed, so it's much less frequent in high-budget stuff. Low budget films still don't have much choice.

I must admit it was jarring at first seeing those present day objects used for something as futuristic as Dune, especially considering our new digital era, but then you just look at movies like OT Star Wars, Alien films, Terminator duology, Blade Runner and other... They feel so real because all elements are recreated with real materials, even if it's some junk or present day clothes... It makes me love DV's choice even more.

I actually think the re-dressing of real world items works vastly better most of the time. For instance, I find that none of the made from scratch weapons in the Star Wars sequel trilogy look nearly as real or tangible as the weapons in the OT which were largely redressed and modified WW2 weaponry.

I guess we're subconsciously attached to aesthetic and functionality of real items. Items made from scratch aren't "lived-in", we didn't experience them and they're just visual fantasy most of the time.

Quickly, someone decipher the brand of shoes!

Finished the first book today, holy moly was that amazing. I’m now onto Dune: Messiah next. Heard this is pretty much the next chapter for Paul.

Once I’m done with that, I’m going to wait on going any further with Herbert’s books... without reading something else in between, don’t want to burn out/through all of his Dune too quickly.

This will start around 10,191 AG... and will take place over two years through 10,193 AG.

dune is scifi. should sets look like this? i respect the directors style ''less is more'' but i think here they could do more.

Yes. Despite being very far in the future, it is not described as a technological wonderland. It pushes the feudal aspect in at all levels. The technology is all very low key.

Just to echo everyone else... READ THE NOVEL. While DUNE is most definitely scifi, I don't think it's the kind of scifi you might be thinking it is. The look of the sets we've seen so far are pretty much a perfect fit for what's on the page.
