Sci-Fi Dune

Seems weird this movie as movie isnt doing well in China. I expected drop, but not 84% drop. China usually gobble up this kind of movies. Big epic sagas. But I guess story about liberator of people with arabic sounding name wont do well there.

They don't care for Star Wars either. TFA made 120M, Rogue One 69M, TLJ 41M, Solo 16M and TROS 20M.

For me this isn't about the base of the series or what the genre is.

It's THIS movie and how it's executed. I am intrigued by all the ideas of DUNE. I've found them interesting since I was a teen.

I cannot fathom why this version is being praised, not even generally, but by ANYONE.

It's objectively a monumental visual acheivment... And I seem to recall my entire time here on the Hype that visuals are never enough to justify either a film's existence or one's personal enjoyment, that character and plot must rule the day when analysing films and that beautiful CGI can never ever replace practical visuals and on and on for nine years now... So I don't understand the juices this gets flowing in people and that's after seeing it twice and being disinterested and bored to tears each time.

I don't get it. Both the film and how people are reacting to it given what so many have claimed were their standards for so many other things that have hit our screens.
Plenty of character and story and themes to analyze with Dune. Even if that wasn't the case, if a film is a visual achievement then that should be enough for you to understand why there's praise. It's a visual medium after all. You can tell a story with just visuals and make it mean something.

I don't understand what the point of that Herald scene was.
It is a scene that very smoothly incorporates a lot of things that would've otherwise been exposition or separate scenes.

* The emporer ordered this family to go to Arakis to rule it.
* The imperium is one of excess and tradition, spending so much on something so trivial.
* It shows Paul is looking at the example his father sets.
* Tells us Leto is a man who highly values honor and that he wants his son to follow in his footsteps.
* It sets up the motif of Leto's ring.
* Introduces Gurney as well as Thufir with his mentat powers.
* Introduces the Spacing Guild, even if only by name and through representatives.
* Gives us the first look at the Bene Gesserit through the intro of Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam while also showing her tension with Jessica.
* And it introduces us to a lot of the visual elements, costumes, ships, while also giving a sense of scale to the house Atreidis.

All neatly packed in such a short scene. I actually found this, and the breakfast scene with Jessica to be the most clever additions in the movie. It gets across a lot of exposition with seemingly very little effort.

Which is why we got the graveyard scene.
Yeah... But after 2 hours and 45 minmutes to have like... One scene with relatable elements and an actually delineated human relationship that is not really built up any more than this brief moment...

There's reasons there are people bemoaining the opaqueness and dullness of the film.

Welcome to Dune. Where the relationships are ****ed up. In the novel, you would be fine if you were mistaken that Gurney was more of a father figure than Leto to Paul.

This movie will not hold your hand. You have to be able to pick up a lot of subtle cues from what we are given. We are not given the extremely long inner monologues like Lynch did.

Yeah I'm sure people who haven't read the book picked up on all of that.
I didn't read the books, or at least I've only started it after watching the movie, so... yes. Which is what makes the scene so good.

I think the Herald scene was fine. The original book starts with Reverend Mother Mohiam testing Paul with the pain box.

The stuff at the front of the movie was meant to ease the audience into the world some more and give a little bit more perspective on House Atreides, the current universe's culture and traditions.

I'd say there's no reason they couldn't have introduced Feyd in this movie. Other than wanting to save more material for Part 2.

I think at this point more characters would've meant less screentime for everyone. I'm actually happy that they're keeping some characters for part 2.

I didn't need Feyd introduced in person, but I wish he was mentioned, at least. If he's in part 2, it probably will feel out of nowhere. Like suddenly Leto has a twin brother.

To be honest, I won't be shocked if he's removed from the adaptation entirely.

You can't remove Feyd. That's absolutely wrong.

Who knows. Chasing simplification of the world of Dune as much as possible, they might just remove the subplot of marital plans of the Harkonnens.

So now you're admitting the movie has no character development.

It's not really possible to "admit" that for a film that even ends on an unusual note because the choice was to use character development as the climax, with Paul having been driven to actively choosing to take a path that he knows could lead to a terrible future that he feared before.

Yeah, I can see why this wouldn't really click with the public too well. Not even due to how dense it all is (though that's part of it) but like others have said the characterizations are all pretty cold.

Dune's never really been my thing personally, kind of...respect the books more than actually holding them dear, but it's probably fair to say Denis could have strived a little more to make these people "pop" a bit more. It's definitely a bit excessive & *********ory with that runtime too, for a part 1. There's a lot to cover, no doubt, but some further editing wouldn't have gone astray.

HBO Max is cutting into its legs, no doubt. It had way better drops in Europe when there wasn't a streaming option yet.

A -62% drop isn't that bad considering the day-and-date release format. Most other WB films this year had more than 70% decline.
At this point it doesn't matter what kind of legs it has. With HBO Max and a green lit sequel.
It doesn't necessarily matter in the short-term of this franchise but in the age of superheroes, Star Wars, Transformers and Family Dom-inating everything it's good to see some quality blockbuster like this doing well. The more it makes the better the chances for more films like this in the future.

Denis in some interview said he made this movie for himself more than anyone else. Because of connection he has with book and made it the way I guess he visualized it reading it. Could have he made it different, sure. But we literally just watched half of book or half story of whole movie. I find it hard to critize some details extensively like with characters when some arcs of characters are yet to possibly happen.

I was just gonna say that now that it's been officially greenlit, why would i or anyone else waste their time caring if Dune makes money or totally bombs? Part 2 is happening. So now it's just down to if rich ppl make money or not lol. Which is far from my concern.
